WEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - A driver with a need for speed was stopped and arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol after driving over 100 miles per hour on the Florida Turnpike, Sunday evening.
Cell phone video shows troopers chasing a Jeep Grand Cherokee near Southwest 8th Street at the ramp to the turnpike in West Miami-Dade around 7 p.m.
“Oh nah he’s buggin’,” said the cell phone owner during the recording.
Authorities said Jose Alberto Rodriguez was behind the wheel trying to elude police and driving erratically up to speeds of 140 miles per hour before going off-road and eventually coming to a stop.
According to the police report, troopers spotted the Grand Cherokee with a temporary paper tag on State Road 836. They attempted to stop the car but as soon as they got behind Rodriguez and turned their lights on, he immediately took off.
The video shows the SUV attempting to first get on the turnpike southbound from the eastbound lanes of 8th Street but suddenly Rodriguez then makes a u-turn and gets on the grass in an attempt to elude FHP.
He didn’t go far.
Rodriguez eventually surrenders with his hands in the air to authorities.
The 30-year-old was arrested. He faces several charges including eluding police, possession of a weapon while committing an offense, no vehicle registration and no valid driver’s license.
No one was injured.
