About This Guide

Turning points refer to moments, periods, and catalysts of significant historical change. This LibGuide will allow you to explore several turning points in White House history including the building and burning of the White House, modern restorations of the White House, activism and advocacy, first ladies, and space exploration.

  • Primary sources include photographs, paintings, illustrations, and archival video footage spanning from the 1790s to 2015.
  • Secondary sources and additional resources include expert and historian written articles, short learning videos, classroom tools, and more.

Through the materials gathered in this guide, the Association's Education and Digital Library teams have brought a multitude of materials into one convenient location to help teachers and other professionals with their planning and research. This collection further serves to highlight the complex roles that the White House fills as a home and office for the president and first family as well as a stage for turning points.
