WORCESTER, MASS. (WHDH) - A portion of a road collapsed in Worcester Monday afternoon, officials confirmed.

Flying above Heard Street, SKY7-HD spotted a large hole surrounded by traffic cones in the roadway. City officials said an 8-inch water main ruptured overnight, causing the ground to cave in.

The collapse occurred near a railroad overpass, and debris fell down near the tracks below the road.

Worcester Department of Public Works crews were working to repair the hole around 6 p.m., and bridge inspectors were on scene. Part of Heard Street was blocked off Monday evening.

Crews shut off water in the area, but no one living nearby was without water as of 9 p.m.

People who live in the area came out to take a look at the hole in the road Monday night.

“I mean, I take this road a lot, so that’s why I honestly wanted to see it. I commute on that road. I’m like, ‘What if that was me?’ That’s why I came out and saw it,” one local said.

“The whole right, one of the lanes is completely shot out, just a huge sinkhole, at least 10 to 15 feet deep. It collapsed right on the tracks right next to it, and they had to get a backhoe and clear off the tracks,” he continued. “So thankfully nobody got hurt.”

No other information was immediately available.
