About us
Together, We Find Evidence for a Better World. NORC at the University of Chicago is an objective, nonpartisan research organization that partners with government, corporate, and nonprofit clients around the world to inform the critical decisions facing society. For more than 80 years, NORC has used proven methods and pioneered new techniques to study the broad spectrum of human experience. We have explored the structural and personal factors that contribute to health and well-being, examined how we best learn at different stages of development, and how education systems contribute to positive and negative outcomes. NORC has charted the nature of employment and work and created deep knowledge about the state of the national economy and our relationship with money and income. We have helped governments around the world design, implement, and evaluate programs to improve the human condition. And we have probed the heart of the American psyche to understand the sometimes-conflicting views that will shape the future of the country. We now look to the future in a context of accelerating change within the industry, growing amounts and types of data, dramatic technological shifts, a dynamic population, and a growing and diversifying set of players in the research and data industries. In this environment, we must chart a course of evolutionary yet bold change that will build upon our traditional strengths to ensure our relevance, impact, and long-term sustainability.

NORC was excited to kick off #HispanicHeritageMonth this week with a presentation from the LatiNORC Employee Resource Group! LatiNORC hosted a panel for NORC staff featuring Spanish-speaking interviewers from our Field Operations and Telephone Survey & Support Operations (TSSO) departments. Melissa Leffingwell, Martha Ruvalcaba, Kathleen Arango, and Alondra Herrera all spoke about their unique journeys, how culture shapes their role as interviewers, their experiences working with Latine and non-Latine respondents, and the types of language barriers they must overcome. As the panelists shared, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to “celebrate my other half,” and to “get recognized, and for other people to know a little more about us.” It is a time when “we learn from each other, and we all come together.” It is also an occasion to “receive recognition” that “NORC wouldn’t be what it is if it wasn’t for us.” Thanks to LatiNORC and our wonderful panelists for an engaging and thoughtful discussion! #ERG #NORC #LatiNORC #SomosLatiNORC #LatinxHeritageMonth #LatineHeritageMonth

So proud that NORC at the University of Chicago built a Center on Equity Research, so we can contribute to studies like this. This quote... "Another finding was that the fewer resources people had, the more financially near-sighted they were. This tendency of the economically impoverished to focus more on immediate goals, like paying bills, rather than building wealth will make it more difficult for those Black Americans who find themselves on the bottom of the economic ladder to achieve long-term financial stability and build generational wealth.” --Vincent Welch Jr

Social researcher in the arts, culture, museums, public media, public space, science engagement, etc. Co-leader at Slover Linett. Working toward equity through research, evaluation and co-creation.
My friends, huge news today for me and my Slover Linett Audience Research colleagues: I’m thrilled to share that our practice is becoming part of one of the most respected #socialresearch organizations in the country — NORC at the University of Chicago! This is transformative, but also profoundly affirming of where we’ve been trying to go and grow. It instantly deepens our ability to inform change and amplify #community voices across the #artsandculture field. And it gives us more resources, new tools, and new, brilliant colleagues with complementary expertise and perspectives to bring to our clients and projects. Read all about it here: https://lnkd.in/gChrhPUa I’m so grateful to the many people who built this vision with me, including Tanya Treptow, Cory Garfin, Madeline Smith, and especially Michael Reynolds, the amazing leader of The Bridge at NORC, where our whole team and all our projects will be based…and where NORC’s own powerful work in #artsresearch is underway (Gwendolyn Rugg!). Please join me in giving a high five to this new future: audience and community research that’s animated by #equity and supports the work of #creativity, healing, and transformation — in and *through* culture and the arts. Onward together!
Announcing a transformative step forward for our practice: We’re joining NORC!

Introducing Slover Linett at NORC! That’s right, Slover Linett Audience Research, a leading research and evaluation practice in the arts and culture field, has officially joined NORC! The combined strength of both organizations in arts, culture, and community research will provide even more powerful insights for equity, innovation, and change. “By joining NORC, we enter an incredible new era for our whole team, with new tools and resources to bring to the cultural sector,” said Peter Linett co-founder of Slover Linett and now NORC senior fellow. “There is so much that we at NORC can contribute to their work, and so much we are eager to learn from them about the perspectives and approaches Slover Linett has developed working in this unique field.” said Michael Reynolds, NORC senior vice president and director of The Bridge at NORC. Together, NORC and Slover Linett look forward to exploring the intersections between culture and NORC’s other social-sector practice areas, and to offering even more valuable thought-partnership to clients.
