“A key measure of any democracy is its ability to absorb and adapt to change. We are capable of marshaling our ideas to mitigate the bad—and particularly to harness the good—into reforms that reflect and preserve democratic values. It’s important for us to remember we are capable of doing this.” —Vivian Schiller of Aspen Digital Last week, a group of experts gathered by Aspen Digital and Columbia Institute of Global Politics discussed how advances in artificial intelligence are already reshaping entire sectors as well as the flow of news, information, and media—and what that means in a U.S. election year. Companies with significant #employeeownership have solid business performance, #jobquality that is better than industry peers, and are broadly popular with the public and politicians of both parties. So why don't we have more of it? As I write with Joseph Blasi and Matt Helmer in Fast Company, the system is stacked against it. But it doesn't have to be that way! We write about some ideas here, and we'll be exploring more next week at the Employee Ownership Ideas Forum. Join us there or comment here and let us know what you think!

How do you know if what you are reading on the internet is a fact or a manufactured "truth"? In this age of information overload, it is becoming increasingly difficult to discern reality from opinions and misinformation. This raises a crucial question: how can we possibly find common ground in our communities or our politics if we not able to agree on what's real? Melanie Lundquist - esteemed philanthropist and co-founder of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, offers a compelling solution. Expanding on her advocacy for philanthropy to spearhead change, as discussed at the Aspen Ideas Festival last summer, Melanie shares in her essay for The Commons, a noble project by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, how funding and supporting " nonpartisan non-profits that serve as honest brokers and empower us to become honest brokers ourselves" can become a lasting solution for thriving democracy. Explore Melanie's insightful essay, where she highlights the transformative impact of initiatives like The News Literacy Project in engaging rising generation to protect the draining democracy and advocates for accelerating financial support for philanthropic ventures dedicated to enhancing democracy.
