Last week, our team and Columbia Institute of Global Politics hosted global leaders to analyze the role #AI has played in 2024 #elections to date and what this means for those upcoming. Here's what they said. Miss the live stream? Watch the recording here: https://lnkd.in/gVz9AHx8 Already, the world has seen 2024 elections in Taiwan, Argentina, Slovakia, and more, all while generative AI continues to reshape the information environment. In a year where billions are heading to the polls, the stakes for global #democracies are substantial. “Anybody who’s not worried is not paying attention," said Secretary Hillary Clinton at the event. "As we’re here today doing this panel, there are literally people planning how to interrupt, interfere with, and distort elections, not just in the United States but around the world.” Perhaps even more worrisome than the role they play in creating #DeepFake content, AI tools can now be exploited to suppress hyperlocal voting blocks through highly tailored false messages, created cheaply and circulated at scale. While daunting, this challenge is not unheard of. As our team's Vivian Schiller reminds us, "We are engaged in a quintessentially American tradition, forming a democratic response to emerging technologies. A key measure of any democracy is its ability to absorb and adapt to change. We are capable of marshaling our ideas to mitigate the bad—and particularly to harness the good—into reforms that reflect and preserve democratic values. It’s important for us to remember we are capable of doing this.” Dive deeper into the conversation with a recap by our colleague John Peabody: https://lnkd.in/etadxPi3

As officials prepare for worst-case scenario attacks on America's critical infrastructure, our team's Katie D'Hondt Brooks joined Foreign Policy's Rishi Iyengar to discuss the recent evolution in #China's #cyber tactics. “I think they’ve become increasingly brazen, to the point where the U.S. government finds it necessary to call out that behavior in public,” she said. In an interview for the article, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Director Jen Easterly painted a bleak picture, “What is most alarming about this is the focus is not on data theft and intellectual property theft but rather to burrow deep into our critical infrastructure with the intent of launching destructive or disruptive attacks in the event of a major conflict.” What about other adversaries? On threats to the #2024Elections, Brooks added, “I think any of these threat actors are looking for vectors of instability. So elections, definitionally, while hopefully free, fair, and democratic, are also destabilizing in many senses because they present the possibility of a change in power.” Go here to read more: https://lnkd.in/gncnwAkR

Happy to have shared an illuminating event at Columbia Institute of Global Politics and interesting conversations with internet policy analysts, thought leaders and researches in disinformation and artificial intelligence. We had a great panel with Dominika Hajdu, Ethan Tu and Anya Schiffrin where we discussed international challenges on this front. Thanks to co-organizers Aspen Digital, dean Keren Yarhi-Milo, Vivian Schiller and professor Hillary Clinton for the invite. And to professor Peter Micek for making this possible.

We are delighted to announce that WITNESS’ shirin anlen and Raquel Vazquez Llorente have been selected as winners of Aspen Digital’s 2023 Reporting on AI Hall of Fame! This recognition was awarded for work that showcases outstanding reporting on AI. In their article, shirin and Raquel outline the scenarios where audiovisual generative AI may have the most potential for human rights advocacy, such as protecting the identity of witnesses or people at risk. They also “reflect on the ethical issues that the use of certain technologies may bring to a human rights organization,” as well as providing a list of questions to consider when applying generative AI for human rights advocacy. You can read an excerpt of shirin and Raquel’s winning submission here: https://lnkd.in/eWxiedVr - Full link to the article is in the comment below. Raquel Vazquez Llorente, Associate Director of the Technology, Threats and Opportunities team at WITNESS, stated the following about Aspen’s prize: “Inclusive technological development hinges on our collective understanding of technology. That is why public conversations about AI are key, but we must ensure that they are accessible to those who will be most impacted by technological transformation. Only by integrating diverse perspectives at every stage of AI's lifecycle can we ensure that AI respects and promotes human rights, rather than undermining them. Aspen Digital’s Reporting on AI Hall of Fame underscores this critical need for an accessible and nuanced public discourse on AI.” #ReportingOnAI
