How are safety and justice connected? It’s not an easy question, but we put it to our friends in the Bronx to explore how these two vital elements of any community are linked. To James from S.O.S Bronx, one can’t exist without the other. How do you see the two being connected? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. ⬇️ 💬

Working with communities and systems to cultivate lasting forms of safety. (Formerly the Center for Court Innovation)
About us
The Center for Justice Innovation (formerly the Center for Court Innovation) is a non-profit organization that works with communities and justice systems to advance equity, increase safety, and help individuals and communities thrive. The Center's goal is to identify and resolve as early as possible the challenges that bring people into the criminal and civil legal systems. It does this in a number of ways—by developing and running programs that reduce the need for incarceration and enhance economic opportunity, conducting original research to identify what works, and sharing what we learn from our programming and research with those seeking to transform the justice system around the world.

🎉 Congratulations to our team at Neighbors in Action for being awarded the Brooklyn Org 2024 Spark Prize! 🎉 NIA is one of five Brooklyn-based nonprofits selected to receive $100,000 based on their history and commitment to Brooklyn, their commitment to racial and social justice, and their strong vision for a better future. We’re proud to see our friends get the recognition they deserve alongside DRIVE CHANGE, INC.., Power of Two, Sure We Can, and Youth Design Center as the other winning “movement makers and system shakers” of Brooklyn. We’re so excited to see what NIA does with this opportunity “to invest in our youth participants' talents and help them pursue their dreams, take them on horizon-broadening trips to exchange ideas with young leaders elsewhere, and see for themselves a world beyond their neighborhood," as project director Anthony Rowe says. ➡️ Read more about Neighbors in Action and the Spark Prize in the official announcement here: https://lnkd.in/eKdvRb2i

Governor Hochul’s proposed budget aims to make New York a safer place for all with progressive, people-driven policies. Here are some highlights we believe are vital for justice: ➡️ $347 million investment in programs to prevent and reduce gun violence. ➡️ $24 million to help people with mental health problems who are in the criminal justice system. ➡️ $67 million from the Opioid Settlement Fund for harm reduction, prevention, and recovery services. We’re building community-based initiatives to prevent violence with programs like S.O.S Brooklyn and S.O.S Bronx. By changing neighborhood norms and training respected members of the community as first responders to defuse conflicts, we can stop the spread of violence without adding to the harms of the system. 📖 Read more about our innovative approach to ensuring community safety and justice here: https://bit.ly/3TOvRq8 In what ways do you see safety and justice being connected? Those most impacted by an issue are the ones who know best how to find lasting solutions. That’s especially true of human trafficking, where survivors are often criminalized and further harmed by our systems instead of receiving the support and protection they need. We work with survivors of human trafficking to offer paths out of the criminal legal system and promote healing from the extensive trauma many survivors face. ➡️ With Project HEAL, which officially launched yesterday in honor of #NationalTraffickingAwarenessDay, we provide tools for survivors of human trafficking to become leaders and changemakers in their lives and communities. ➡️ In our other programs like our Child Witness Materials project and Queens HOPE program in Far Rockaway, we further uplift survivors through innovative approaches. We need to place residents themselves at the center of the decisions that impact their communities. That means supporting local, collective decision-making in everything from designing public spaces, to community events and resource fairs, to how money should be invested into the neighborhood. Lovis from Bronx Community Solutions sees this in her vision for what safety looks like. 🗣️ Follow us this week to hear more from our community about what safety looks like to them, and read more about our approach to public safety here: https://bit.ly/3TOvRq8

Our justice system and the communities they serve need human trafficking survivors’ voices to shape solutions. That's why Project HEAL's (Helping to Empower through Advocacy and Leadership) new survivor leadership curriculum and supporting materials are crucial. Here's how you can make a difference: ⬇️ Download our FREE curriculum and supporting materials: Packed with activities for survivor leader training and peer support programs, facilitation strategies for engaging youth, and recommendations on peer support and survivor engagement. Versions are available for both youth and adults in English, Spanish, and Mandarin 📢 Spread the word: Share this post and tag organizations working with survivors. 🤝 Join the movement: Support programs like Project HEAL that amplify survivor voices.
