We investigate and campaign against environmental crime and abuse
About us
Environmental Investigation Agency UK is a UK charity, number 1182208. We investigate and campaign against environmental crime and abuse. Our undercover investigations expose transnational wildlife crime, with a focus on elephants, pangolins and tigers, and forest crimes such as illegal logging and deforestation for cash crops like palm oil. We work to safeguard global marine ecosystems by addressing the threats posed by plastic pollution, bycatch and commercial exploitation of whales, dolphins and porpoises. Finally, we reduce the impact of climate change by campaigning to eliminate powerful refrigerant greenhouse gases, exposing related illicit trade and improving energy efficiency in the cooling sector.

On International Leopard Day, these shy big cats need us to end their commercial exploitation Secretive and almost ghostlike, leopards are seldom seen or heard, but are the widest-ranging of the big cats, having historically thrived throughout much of Africa and Asia. Powerful, intelligent and adaptive, these remarkable cats manage to persist in habitats spanning deserts to tropical rainforests, across grasslands, high mountains, wetlands and the snow-filled expanses of the Russian Far East. Particularly in South Asia, they have managed to survive in close proximity to human beings, nowhere being as astonishing an example as the high-density population of leopards in the heart of Mumbai, one of the world’s busiest megalopolises. Notwithstanding their adaptability, leopard populations are in decline globally, with the International Union for Conservation of Nature having downgraded their conservation status from Near Threatened to Vulnerable in 2016 – and anticipating future population declines ... 🐆 Read our special blog now at https://loom.ly/r3neTIU #illegalwildlifetrade #TCM #leopards #InternationalLeopardDay #loveleopards

BREAKING: Global Plastics Treaty negotiating countries fail to respond to the magnitude of the crisis The fourth round of talks for a Global Plastics Treaty has wrapped up in Canada with a hugely disappointing decision to exclude discussions on the production of primary plastic polymers – a key root source of plastic pollution. EIA Ocean Campaigner Jacob Kean-Hammerson, who is at the talks, said: “The INC has once again failed to ask the most fundamental question to the success of the future treaty – how do we tackle the unsustainable production of plastics? “While it is important to discuss the financial aspects, how can we discuss means of implementation without knowing what we are implementing? “If we continue to ignore the calls of progressive countries and allow blocker countries to hold the talks hostage, we will fail to reach our shared ambition of ending plastic pollution.” Get the full story now at https://loom.ly/jKqP__Q #INC4 #plastics #pollution #oceans #climatechange

New CatByte data project aims to strengthen responses to big cat poaching and trafficking In 2023, EIA and data specialist Go Insight identified a major gap in the analysis of big cat crime trends and the convergence in the supply chain of Asian big cats with other big cats including lions, cheetahs and jaguars. Through engagement with EIA and Go Insight’s networks, it became clear that there was a great appetite for an aggregated analysis relating to the poaching, trade and trafficking of big cats and the similarities and differences in trade dynamics across those species. Plans developed quickly and in late 2023 we were thrilled to receive seed funding from The Ho Family Foundation to create a big cat data centre called CatByte ... 🐯 Full story at https://loom.ly/7EyhG1U #illegalwildlifetrade #tigers #leopards #data
