GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives)'s analysis shows that if the world doesn’t cut plastic production by 12-17% per year, we can kiss the Paris Climate goals goodbye. Even if GHG emissions from all other sectors are eliminated this year, current plastic production trends could exhaust the global carbon budget by as early as 2060.

❌🌏 Plastic kills all life on earth 🌍❌ Plastic pollution is a crisis that grows bigger each day and its victims are disproportionately black, brown, Indigenous and under-resourced communities. In 2022, world leaders agreed to work on a Plastics Treaty that addresses this problem from production to disposal, and set a deadline for the end of 2024. Despite promises for change and the imminent deadline, little progress has been made, with rich nations dumping waste and corporations pushing false solutions and putting profits over people. On April 21st, as world leaders convene to negotiate the Plastics Treaty in Ottawa, we will be calling out this greenwashing and reminding leaders who they are negotiating for. 🏭 Did you know that plastic production causes greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 189 coal power plants? Plastics are created from petrochemicals and are the largest contributor to the rise in demand for oil and gas. 90% of all greenhouse gases related to plastics are released at the production stage. Incinerating or recycling plastics creates 193 mt CO2e per year. That’s more than the annual emissions of two Belgiums!
