Our #storyoftheweek is a compelling piece of immersive storytelling from the Liverpool Echo. Political editor Liam Thorp, data editor Annie Gouk, Adam Walker and Marianna Longo created Liverpool: Austerity City which uses data, graphics, and interviews with leading figures to explore the impact policy has had on the city over the past 14 years. The team carried out extensive analysis and research to see exactly how the decisions made have affected people’s lives, through aspects such as child poverty, economic growth, homelessness and an NHS in crisis. Today we launch our 5,000 voices project, a vox pop video series capturing the public’s views in the run-up to the general election. Over 40 journalists in a dozen locations across the UK will take to the streets to ask 5,000 people about the issues which are important to them, particularly those they feel are not being given enough attention by politicians or the media. The results will be shared across our titles including the Mirror, the Express, the Manchester Evening News, ChronicleLive, Liverpool Echo, Daily Record and Wales Online. Helen Dalby, Audience and Content Director for Reach in the North East and Yorkshire, said: “Vox pops are a classic for a reason - they always uncover something surprising and they’re a brilliant and lively reminder that even in one neighbourhood, there is so much diversity of background and opinion. Our local newsrooms have a vital role to play in giving people in the communities they represent a voice, and allowing them to be heard on the issues that matter to them. This project is an important part of making those voices heard as loudly as possible.” #electioncoverage #localjournalism #journalism
