Angel Tsai, RN, BSN, a nurse at UCLA Health, altruistically donated her kidney to an anonymous recipient, and has experienced much joy in doing so. After her operation, Tsai’s donated kidney was immediately transported to a waiting recipient in New Jersey. Her surgeon, H. Albin Gritsch, MD, states how the generosity of donors like Tsai continually is a source of wonder. "This is the most altruistic gift one can make,” said Dr. Gritsch, the John Jergens Chair in Kidney Transplantation. April is Donate Life Month, which brings attention to organ, eye, and tissue donation. Donors save lives. Read more about Angel's experience: https://ucla.in/4adIZKC

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US. Last month, we partnered with the American Cancer Society to host the inaugural Los Angeles Moonshot Summit on a mission to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Many thanks to Folasade (Fola) May, MD, PhD, panelist on Access to Care, Dr. Amy Cummings, keynote speaker, Dominic Parero, chair of the summit, Lolita Lopez, emcee of the luncheon, and Katina Bland, the Mission Impact Speaker, as well as many other participants. The summit brought attention to local cancer research efforts in medicine, clinical trials and outcomes that will help bridge equity gaps. Thank you to UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and American Cancer Society - California for bringing awareness to our community.

Kemi Reeves RN, MSN, GNP-BC is appreciated not only for her kindness but also for her ability to carefully listen and act as an effective patient advocate. She began this role as a teenager in New Orleans, caretaking for her great-grandmother, Pearl. Years later, this experience served her well as a gerontological nurse practitioner. Today she serves as the Lead Dementia Care Specialist in the UCLA Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Program. Always an innovator, Kemi has helped establish several programs at UCLA Health. Notably, she was the force behind UCLA Health's Unity and Diversity Council, which aims to improve patient care through equity, diversity and inclusion-related nursing practices. She was key in launching Unity in Kindness Day, an annual event in which UCLA staff engage in wellness activities and learn about EDI principles. Always a student, Kemi is completing her final year in a Doctor of Nurse Practitioner/Master of Business Administration program, focusing on how to impact highly specialized care.
