* The "U.S. born" and "Foreign born" figures for Puerto Ricans represent the counts for Puerto Ricans born in the 50 states and D.C. and those born in Puerto Rico, respectively. The "Total" figure for Puerto Ricans is the sum of the U.S.-born and foreign-born Puerto Rican population. Those born in Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens at birth.
** The wording and format of the 2000 census question on Hispanic origin differ from previous and subsequent versions of the question. These differences affected response patterns by lowering the share of specific national origin responses and increasing the number and share of generic response (e.g., “Spanish,” “Hispanic,” “Latino”). The number of Spaniards, in particular, was drastically reduced so that the data are not comparable to subsequent ACS data. Care should be taken when comparing any of the data from the 2000 census to ACS data for later years. Note: Hispanics are of any race. Figures greater than 1 million are rounded to the nearest 100,000; other figures greater than 100,000 are rounded to the nearest 10,000; figures that are less than or equal to 100,000 and greater than 25,000 are rounded to the nearest 5,000. The "Some other origin" category includes those who reported being "Central American," "South American," or who indicated they were Hispanic but did not specify an origin. The Paraguayan population in the U.S. did not have any observations in the 5% 2000 decennial census file on IPUMS.
