Clinicians: New MMWR discusses CDC’s recommendation for an RSV vaccine during pregnancy to reduce the risk of severe RSV in young infants. In clinical trials, this vaccine reduced infant hospitalization from RSV by 57% in the first 6 months after birth. The vaccine can be given September through January (for most of the U.S.) during weeks 32–36 of pregnancy. Talk to your pregnant patients about the RSV vaccine for themselves or the RSV antibody for babies, another option for protecting babies from severe RSV. Read the MMWR: https://bit.ly/mm7241e1

Clinicians: A new MMWR found that older adults had fewer hospitalizations for RSV than for COVID-19 or flu. However, older adults hospitalized with RSV had more serious outcomes, such as ICU admission or needing advanced respiratory support, compared to patients hospitalized with either COVID-19 or flu. This report can help inform decision-making around RSV vaccination: https://bit.ly/mm7240a2

Clinicians: A recent study on RSV hospitalizations among adults 60 years and older found that 17% of those hospitalized were admitted to ICU. Some of the most common underlying conditions among older adult patients who were hospitalized with RSV included obesity, COPD, congestive heart failure, and diabetes. RSV vaccines can help protect adults 60 and older from severe RSV illness. Read the MMWR: https://bit.ly/mm7240a1
