First, an emoji version of “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” and now this: Have a listen to Sia’s version “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile.”
With its references to the likes of “Saville Row,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile” is one Annie song that clearly needed a modern update for the new movie remake (scheduled for a Dec. 19 release), which takes place in the 21st century. But did it need this modern update? Your guess is as good as mine. Let’s just say it’s very hard to do a time step to this version.
“Hey, hobo man / Hey, Dapper Dan” has become “Hey America / Let’s turn it up.” Meanwhile, “Your clothes may be Beau Brummelly / They stand out a mile” has become something more evocative of Kreayshawn, “Your clothes may be Chanel, Gucci / Your shoes crocodile.” There’s also a completely new chorus with generically inspirational lyrics—no sign of “who cares what they’re wearing on Main Street or Saville Row.” There’s at least a nod to the play’s Boylan sisters with some electronic “doo doodle-oo doos.”
