Agnes Kalekje Nguna

Agnes Kalekje Nguna, Chief Operating Officer of the Star Newspaper (Nairobi, Kenya), is a seasoned media leader with over 17 years of experience in the industry. She began her career as a freelance sales executive, rising over the ranks, taking on increasingly senior roles, and expanding her expertise in strategic planning, business development, financial management and operational management. Currently serving as the COO of the Star Newspaper, she is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company operations. The Star is the third-largest newspaper in Kenya. It was launched in July 2007 as the Nairobi Star, a 32-page tabloid-style newspaper concentrating on human-interest stories in Nairobi and Kenya. The Star is majority owned by the Radio Africa Group, who also operate Kiss FM and Classic FM, as well as Kiss TV, Radio Jambo, XFM and East FM”

Beyond her role at the Star Newspaper, Agnes is actively involved in various leadership positions within the industry. She is the current Chair of the Media Owners Association, an umbrella body that represents media houses in Kenya and speaks with one voice on issues affecting the industry. As the chair of Media Owners, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the direction and priorities of the Association, ensuring it serves as a unified voice for the industry. Additionally, Agnes serves on the Supervisory Board of the World Association of Newspapers.

Agnes commitment to public service is evident through her involvement in several key initiatives. She serves as a member of the Information, Communication and Digital Economy sector working group that advises and provides insights to the Government on Policy and Legislative reforms in the broadcast sector in Kenya and on innovation and fair regulation within the media industry. Agnes is a trustee member of the National Cancer Institute, where she actively contributes to advancing cancer prevention, research, treatment, and patient care. She is also a member of the National Drought Response team, which collaborates with stakeholders to mitigate the impact of drought on affected communities in Kenya.
