Waco firefighters reported a slow July Fourth holiday in terms of reported fires and other public safety incidents.
Thanks in part to a rainy spring, there were no major fires over the holiday, said Patrick Veselka, the Waco Fire Department’s deputy chief of emergency operations. The department received 60 calls on the holiday, a majority for medical concerns. Six fires were reported, four small grass fires and two dumpster fires, Veselka said.
Fire marshal’s office personnel patrolled the city throughout the evening for fireworks, which are prohibited in Waco, issuing more than 100 verbal warnings and one citation. They confiscated fireworks with a combined value estimated in the hundreds of dollars, he said. The fire department is not aware of any fireworks-related injuries, Veselka said.

Fireworks explode near McLane Stadium’s Touchdown Alley during Thursday’s patriotic show in downtown Waco. An estimated 10,000 people turned out for the official event, and thousands more took in the show from the peripheries.
An estimated 10,000 people took part in the city’s annual Fourth on the Brazos festivities at Touchdown Alley outside McLane Stadium, capped by a 22-minute fireworks show, Waco Parks and Recreation Director Jonathan Cook said. Several thousand more watched the fireworks show from the periphery of the official event, Cook said.

Pyro Shows of Texas put on the show, which followed an evening of concerts and cost more than $30,000.
Cook said Fourth on the Brazos was once again “really successful and smooth” in its ninth-straight year at Touchdown Alley, relocated from its former home near the Suspension Bridge due to growing crowds. This year’s turnout was in line with previous years, he said.
“It’s one of these events that’s just a longstanding Waco tradition, and it showed through the strength of our community that we come together to celebrate our nation,” Cook said. “We had no issues to report, just very minor (things), not even heat-related illness. (It) seemed like everybody stayed hydrated. No security concerns.
“And so, that’s all good news when you put on an event of this caliber.”

Fans rock out to the music of Steve Augeri, former lead singer of famed 1970s-80s band Journey, at Touchdown Alley during the Fourth on the Brazos event along the Brazos River on Thursday..
Veselka said the fire department had a crew standing by at the Fourth on the Brazos event, and there was also an emergency medical service team on the water.
The fireworks show started around 9:15 p.m. Thursday and lasted just over 22 minutes.
Cook said parking for the event was not an issue on the front end.

Fireworks explode near McLane Stadium’s Touchdown Alley during Thursday’s patriotic show in downtown Waco. Thousands turned out for the event from around the area, marking the end of the city’s Fourth on the Brazos celebration.
“But just like a major football game at the stadium, or if you go to a concert, there is a delay in getting people out,” Cook said. “We do have a traffic control plan where we work with multiple agencies, and we were all cleared in less than an hour following the fireworks.”
Baylor University’s Ferrell Center lot was used for overflow parking, and some people like to set up there and look across the Brazos River for a different vantage point, he said.
“We park people at McLane Stadium first, and then we use Ferrell Center, the Law School — Baylor’s a great partner in letting us use those parking lots,” Cook said. “But as with any firework show, you have that 30 to 45 minutes right before where everybody’s trying to get to the right spot, and we’ve got some backup (traffic). But overall, just a tremendously smooth event for us, and that’s kudos to our community.”

Crowds were out in force for Fourth on the Brazos at Touchdown Alley, featuring musical headliner Steve Augeri, former lead singer of the famed 1970s-80s band Journey.
Veselka said he was “glad to see everyone safe,” across the community and at the Fourth on the Brazos event. Cook said the buildup to the fireworks show is exciting but seeing it come to fruition is his favorite part.
“There’s nothing better than the oohs and ahhs of a crowd during a firework show,” Cook said. “Especially after the finale, that’s why we’re there. There’s something symbolic about the fireworks show, and the holiday of July Fourth and tradition. So, that rings special to me.”
For anyone who missed out on Thursday’s festivities or wants another fireworks show, the Speegleville Volunteer Fire Department will hold a Fireworks Extravaganza fundraiser Saturday.
The fireworks show will begin shortly after dusk at the Speegleville Elementary School, 100 Maywood Drive, and it will last 15 to 20 minutes.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets, and admission is free. Tickets will be available on-site for games and food vendors.
Activities such as bounce houses, cornhole, obstacle courses and more are included. Activity tickets are $1 each.
