Al Pacino will star as Tennessee Williams in the play “God Looked Away,” the Pasadena Playhouse‘s first production under its new development program PlayWorks.
Judith Light (“Transparent”), a two-time Tony winner for her performances in “Other Desert Cities” and “The Assembled Parties,” will also appear in the developmental staging of the new play by Dotson Rader, who also wrote the 1985 memoir about Williams, “Cry of the Heart.” The play will focus on a turbulent period in the playwright’s life.
Light will star as Williams’ close friend Estelle. Other notable cast members include Garrett Clayton (“Hairspray Live!”), Miles Gaston Villanueva (CBS’s “The Young and the Restless”), Andrew Dits (NBC’s “Telenovela”), Broadway and TV vet Matt Gottlieb and Takuma Anzai (NBC’s “Community”).
“As a young playwright, Tennessee Williams premiered two new plays at The Playhouse, and it is fitting that our first PlayWorks production features a revealing glimpse into the life of this great American playwright,” said Danny Feldman, the Playhouse’s producing artistic director.

PlayWorks represents an expansion of the theater’s Hothouse play development program, spawning new works through readings, workshops and development production.
“God Looked Away” will be directed by Robert Allan Ackerman, who directed Pacino on Broadway in “Salome.” The show will run Feb. 8-Mar. 19.
