STATEMENT FROM URGE ON SUPREME COURT’S RULING TO PRESERVE MIFEPRISTONE ACCESS

Today, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Food and Drug Administration allowing the abortion pill, Mifepristone, to continue to be used for abortion and miscarriage care. Mifepristone is a safe and effective drug backed by over 20 years of scientific evidence and has been used by more than 5 million people. This decision prevents more harm from being done in the fight to expand access to medication abortion in the wake of growing abortion restrictions across the country.
In response, Kimberly Inez McGuire, Executive Director of URGE: Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity, said:
“Today, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the FDA in the Food and Drug Administration v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine case, protecting medication abortion for all. While we are relieved that Mifepristone will remain on the market and accessible to providers and individuals seeking to self-manage their abortions, make no mistake, this case should have never made it to the Supreme Court in the first place. It was brought forward by anti-abortion extremists who used unscientific and baseless information as evidence to put forward their sinister agenda to control our bodies. This decision upholds what young BIPOC voters and activists have been fighting for in the streets and at the polls: no politicians or courts involved in our reproductive decisions and care.
“Mifepristone is a safe and effective drug backed by over 20 years of scientific evidence – there is no question that it should be available to those who make the decision to use it.
“As a mother and a person who needed to use medication abortion to safely miscarry earlier this year, it is absolutely essential that all people, no matter their age, immigration status, race, or identity, have access to the healthcare they both need and want.
“While today’s decision was a step in the right direction in the fight to expand access to abortion, abortion remains restricted in over half the country, leaving millions of people without access to the reproductive healthcare they need and deserve. Young people and BIPOC communities are disproportionately impacted by abortion bans, and the stakes have never been higher. As we breathe a sigh of relief over today’s decision, we know that there is much work to do, and we will stand in full support for reproductive freedom in all its forms.
