Stark warning from Assopellettieri president over Made in Italy Leather industry bodies including UNIC - Concerie Italiane, Assocalzaturifici, ASSOPELLETTIERI and the Associazione Italiana Pellicceria took part in a wider meeting between #Italy’s fashion sector and the government’s minister for business and ‘Made in Italy’, Adolfo Urso on August 6. This was the fifth time the so-called Fashion Roundtable has met since it was set up to discuss ways in which the government can help the fashion sector in the face of “the systemic crisis that has gripped fashion production” since the latter part of 2023. After the meeting, Assopellettieri president, Claudia Sequi, highlighted the importance of working with the government at a time when business is difficult for member companies. Significant next step for Stahl in Japan Chemicals group Stahl has opened a new laboratory in Japan, locating it in the Kanagawa Science Park near Tokyo. This facility, which covers 500 square-metres, marks “a significant next step” in Japan, the company said. It said it looked forward to using the laboratory “to co-innovate with customers” there. The senior vice-president for global design at Nissan Motor Corporation, Alfonso Albaisa, was the guest speaker at the opening ceremony and shared what Stahl chief executive, Maarten Heijbroek (pictured), described as “visionary ideas” about the future of car interiors. “He set an inspiring tone for our journey ahead,” Mr Heijbroek said. Low-impact, high-performance, scalable leather has a big role to play 06/08/2024 leatherbiz.com/News/169296 Amsterdam-based innovation hub Fashion for Good has launched a new initiative aimed at making the #footwear supply chain more circular. It said that, with billions of pairs being produced each year and recycling rates still low, there was an urgent need to accelerate innovation in footwear sustainability. It will work with a number of prominent brands to identify #sustainable materials, establish traceability, agree definitions for circular design and improve end-of-life management of shoes. The senior vice-president for product operations at one of the brands involved, adidas, Sigrid Buehrle, said she hoped this initiative would help footwear brands and manufacturers identify a wider range of materials that have a low impact on the environment, meet performance requirements and are also scalable. “Currently, there is a limited portfolio of these materials,” she said. “We hope this initiative will help overcome some of these hurdles.” In 2021, with millions of hides going to waste every year, sustainability consultant Veronica Bates Kassatly said: “The most sustainable shoe fibre at present is leather from low-quality hides. No contest.” If more footwear brands chose to use leather from these affordable hides, they would save huge volumes of useful raw material from going to waste. Ivan Kral, UNIDO’s #leather project manager, introduced this initiative at the first edition of Lineapelle in Milan this February. The final guidelines will be formally presented at the second edition of Lineapelle in September 2024. “We want to create principles for carrying out environmental assessments,” Král stated, “and we want the guidelines to be something that all companies can use in their calculations.” He emphasised the need for consistent and accurate lifecycle assessments (#LCAs), highlighting that previous studies have often resulted in misleading comparisons due to varying methodologies. #leatherindustry SPIN 360 Federico Brugnoli Is It Leather? Largest ever group of apprentices prepares to start at Rolls-Royce Automotive manufacturer Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has recruited the largest-ever number of new #apprentices. It launched its apprenticeship programme in 2006 with 11 young people starting work at the company’s production site at #Goodwood in the south of England. When the 2024 cohort arrives to begin work in August, there will be 32 people in the group. In advance of starting, all 32 of the new apprentices, plus their families, attended an event at Rolls-Royce at the end of July. leatherbiz.com/News/169289
