A key takeaway? How is Phoenix preparing for record summer heat? 🌡️ Arizona is one of the hottest states in America. CBS News recently uncovered the significant steps the city of Phoenix is taking to address the extreme summer heat: 🤝 Appointed the city’s first Heat Officer to manage the effects of the warming city. 🧊 Established two 24/7 cooling centers for residents to gather when temperatures reach extreme highs. 🌳 Initiated a tree-planting campaign along public pathways and roads, creating cooling corridors to mitigate the urban heat island effect. 🏝️ Urban heat islands are caused by concrete and asphalt in large cities. These materials trap and release heat, leading to increased temperatures in cities like Phoenix. These measures are crucial for protecting the community and adapting to extreme heat. The Biden-Harris Administration is investing $4.55 million in community heat resilience through the Investing in America agenda 🌎 Announced by the U.S. Department of Commerce and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, this funding will enhance community heat monitoring and resilience efforts. The funding will benefit The Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring, which will receive $2.3 million to boost community science and data on extreme heat, and The Center for Heat Resilient Communities, which will receive $2.25 million to help local areas strategise and manage heat resilience ☀️ This investment, led by the #NIHHIS, will support communities and equitable heat resilience projects, playing a crucial role in building a more resilient climate future 💡 Do you think this investment in community heat resilience goes far enough to address the challenges of extreme heat? 🤔 Let us know in the comments. 🎤 This year's #AdaptUnbound USA provided the perfect moment to grab a radio mic, hunker down in a broom cupboard and chew the fat with some of the most well-informed people in the #Adaptation and #Resiliency space. 🎤 We're delighted to introduce the new Adapt #UnboundVoices. Jay Stalnacker is the Technical Lead at XPRIZE Wildfire, the $11 million competition to extinguish destructive wildfires. Jay: “We design the box for innovators to think outside of.” Extreme wildfires are on the rise, and globally, the severity of wildfires is increasing. Extreme wildfire events are only around 3% of all wildfires – but drive over 80% of total associated fire damages and cost $350 billion annually in the US alone. Unbound Summits’s Rupert Walker, and Jay discuss the smoking-hot issue of good and bad fire and their respective benefits and dangers to humanity and the planet. Since leaving TIME CO2 a few months ago, I’ve been thinking more about #resilience and #adaptation—both personal and at the level of the planet. On the planetary side, I was lucky to join Adapt Unbound last week in New York and meet more darkly hopeful pragmatists. Some of my takeaways from our conversations: 1. It’s an “inevitable investing opportunity” - the need for more resilient homes, cities, farms, forests, and infrastructure is more certain than our next president or most future policies (paraphrasing Jay Koh) 2. Adaptation has a doom-and-gloom messaging problem (Julia Kumari Drapkin), exacerbated by the persistent misconception that a dollar toward adaptation is a dollar torn away from reducing emissions (Linda-Eling Lee). Many of the things we’re starting to do to reduce emissions also have resilience benefits, and vice versa! (Ex. better cooling tech also reduces electricity use) 3. Contrary to many VCs’ opinion, plenty of adaptation startups are moving ahead and quietly growing 4. This first wave of adaptation startups has focused mainly on software for risk measurement and prediction (ClimateAi, Hohonu, AiDash, Waterplan (YC S21), Pano AI) and consumer goods startups for things like better cooling and air filtration (Metalmark Innovations, Eztia) 5. The next wave is focusing on risk reduction and management, both through financial risk transfer instruments like insurance (Floodbase, Kettle, Delos Insurance Solutions) and physical solutions like permeable concrete and autonomous firefighting (Drone Amplified, EcoGrid Limited). The latter [in my own opinion] will be harder to fund with VC alone unless there are strong policy signals, but will be most critical Thanks for having me Oliver Katz and looking forward to the leaps we'll take by next year.

Presenters discussed innovative approaches to ensure equity in climate resilience efforts, ensuring that the benefits of adaptation reach those most in need. 🌐 Catalyzing Investment for Early-Stage Startups. Practical advice on securing funding and scaling innovations in climate adaptation for early-stage pre-seed ventures was provided to foster a vibrant ecosystem of climate-focused entrepreneurs. 🌐 Mitigation vs. Adaptation: A Zero-Sum Game? The debate over mitigation versus adaptation was examined, questioning whether investing in adaptation detracts from mitigation efforts. The consensus highlighted the necessity of balancing both strategies to ensure comprehensive climate action. 🌐 Tackling the Flood Data Market. The $40 billion market for flood data was examined, emphasizing the importance of accurate data in managing flood risks and enhancing community resilience. 🌐 Living with Climate Change Consequences. A sobering session detailed the extent to which we are already experiencing the consequences of climate change, including deteriorating air quality. Our speakers and delegates showcased the multifaceted approach required to build a resilient climate future, underscoring the critical role of capital and partnerships in driving these essential initiatives forward. This week I had a great time at Adapt Unbound, the *first* (believe it or not!) exclusively climate adaptation innovation focused event in North America. Some key take aways from the event ✍ 1. An energy transition that is not resilient will not reduce GHGs! 🔥 🌊 🌪 2. Our climate is changing irreversibly in our lifetimes and if we want to protect ourselves and our communities, new policies, investments, and companies are needed to adjust to the new normal ⚒ 3. The innovation opportunities that come with this unavoidable reality are NUMEROUS and will be career defining for an incoming class of forward-thinking entrepreneurs 💸 4.
