You’re gonna lose your biggest client. (Yes, I’ve said it before and will say it again). I watched Mad Men (S2 E1). Their agency (Sterling Cooper) had an airline client (Mohawk). Overnight American Airlines, which uses another marketing agency, had a tragic crash. Sterling Cooper, the very next morning, sets about stealing AA from their existing agency. AA agrees to change agency because it “needs a fresh start”. Absolutely nothing to do with service, performance, creative, or the economy. They crashed a plane so they fired their agency. So… You will lose your biggest client. And it will most likely be for a really stupid reason that isn’t your fault. What to do? - Always build your pipeline (even when you’re raking it in) - Always build case studies of said clients - Always have the number for their top three competitors for once you get dumped Clients are precious. But we are disposable. Rootin’ for ya. Snacky 🩵

The rise of drip pricing has left consumers grappling with a fog of hidden costs while airlines seemingly reap the benefits. Nonetheless, this pricing strategy, pioneered by airlines since 2008, has reshaped the landscape of ticket purchasing, presenting both opportunities and challenges for industry players and passengers alike. On one hand, drip pricing has allowed airlines to remain competitive in a market increasingly dominated by budget carriers. How? By offering stripped-down base fares and charging extra for add-ons like seat selection and baggage to capture market share from cost-conscious travellers. The ultimate unbundle value strategy. The flexibility in a value-based pricing ‘unbundling’ structure enables airlines to cater to a more diverse consumer base and appeal to varying customer preferences. All the while maximising new revenue streams. However, the pricing structure does also come at a cost and mainly for consumers. The allure of a low advertised fare, for example, often masks the true total cost of flying, leading travellers to underestimate their expenses until they reach the checkout page. This opacity in pricing not only undermines consumer trust but also complicates the process of comparing fares across airlines, making it challenging for passengers to make informed decisions. Overall, then, price transparency presents itself as a key risk as well as a key pricing opportunity for airlines using drip pricing. While drip pricing offers airlines a promising short term revenue model, its efficacy rests on achieving the balance between profitability and consumer confidence. The problem is, though, the strategy is founded on confusion and ambiguity - two things that customers don’t like at all.
