June is Pride Month, which got me thinking a lot about inclusive copywriting. I’ve touched on this subject before and the importance of writing for a diverse audience. But this time, I want to take it one step further and discuss lesser-known principles of inclusive marketing content. Inclusivity is sooo much more than the words and images you use. It’s also the concepts you reference—or your perceived “norms”—and your assumptions of how others experience the world. For instance, if you’re writing a blog about parental leave policies, you should be mindful of the broader concept of family, including: Same-gender couples Single parents Death of a parent Divorce Co-parenting Surrogacy Fostering and adoption Writing for diverse audiences also requires a deep understanding of their unique experiences, perspectives, and identities. Never just “assume.” Consult resources from these communities to gain first-hand accounts of folks’ experiences and the words they use to represent themselves. Use social media or Reddit to ask people to share their feedback and opinions. Marketers—and everyone, for that matter—should commit to including and respecting everyone and continually honing their skills as allies.

Everyone’s doing intro posts for summer, so I’m unashamedly jumping on the bandwagon. As you may have gathered, I’m Sarah. I love words in every form. Writing, reading, talking (something I can do a lot of). I specialise in human-centric B2B copywriting, and really enjoy working alongside forward-thinking businesses that have bags of ambition. A common message in women’s health that puts me off 👇 (It might be putting your clients off too if you’re a women’s health coach) “You can love your period.” It’s a nice sentiment, but guess what? For many women, myself included, this sounds unrealistic. I can’t think about loving my period yet. Do I think it’s possible? Maybe. But right now, my priority is getting to the point where I don’t: ❎ Fear my period and the pain that comes with it ❎ Worry about whether my next vacation will coincide with my period (if it does, that’s goodbye to a relaxing, worry-free vacation) ❎ Have to block out mornings in my calendar the week of my period in case I have debilitating symptoms Your ideal clients may be at the stage where they want to love their periods and that’s great. Those women deserve support too. But if your ideal client is a woman who has severe pain and discomfort every month or almost every day, she probably doesn’t resonate with “you can love your period.” Don’t skip ahead. Meet your ideal clients where they are. Sure, you should talk about the transformation they can get by working with you. But remember how they feel and what they need to hear now. Focus on helping them go from A to B before you force them on a jet plane to Z-city (that’s illegal by the way, don’t do that 😅). Otherwise, you'll alienate them. If you’re a women’s health professional who needs copy that truly resonates with the women you want to help, DM me “period”. P.S. I still do plenty of client research for every project. I acknowledge this is just my experience. I’ll always dig deep into your ideal clients’ experiences, needs, challenges, and hopes.

Yes, seeing a client’s amazing work highlighted in the media is a total high. But you know what else is? The collaboration that makes it all possible. It is genuinely enjoyable to work with people who care about their mission and take pride in doing excellent work. 3 words to describe my voice? Eeeerrrr I might need a few more digits 😂 Yesterday I took to TikTok and Instagram asking for some help coming up with 3 words to describe my voice from people who have listened to audiobooks I've narrated or who I've worked for... and oh my goodness! The responses I got were just incredible! I couldn't believe how many people had such lovely things to say about my voice! I honestly don't think about my voice that much. I concentrate a LOT on the performance and keeping my vocals healthy and character tones and attitudes, but I don't really think about adjectives of my normal speaking voice - which is why it was so hard for me to try and come up with 3 words on my own. I was beyond thrilled to receive these words describing my voice from listeners and authors yesterday and decided not to narrow it down to just 3. I did make the most commonly said ones a bit bigger and bolder (bright, warm, and clear were the 3 most suggested words in case you really need to know just 3 😉 ) but I liked these all so much that I decided to keep em all! Usually I walk out of the Not Just Numbers Ltd offices having laughed myself stupid with anecdotes about flamingos / stray dogs / slapping someone in the face with a feathered earring. But this morning was different – just as it should be when you’re listening to Steve Phillip speak to us about how to navigate the ‘S’ word: suicide. Steve is quite incredible. He’s taken his unfathomable grief and used it to create The Jordan Legacy CIC: a charity with a mission to significantly reduce the number of people who die by suicide every year in the UK. Today, he educated and empowered us to spot signs and start conversations about what suicide means for employers, the economy and – most importantly - the thousands of people personally impacted by those who lose their lives this way every single year. I’m not going to tell you too many details about what Steve said because I think you should book him and hear him yourself. Whether you’re considering the impact of suicide as an employer, parent, or simply a human being with people you love in your life, Steve will tell you some of the things we need to look out for and what we can do to work towards the only acceptable number of suicides – zero. I expected to cry. But I didn’t expect to laugh, as we all did during a talk that blended emotion, hope and practical tools. Plus, I forgot to eat the biscuit sitting in front of me for a full 45-minutes, which for anyone who knows me is a true testimonial for the power of Steve’s words. I’m paraphrasing, because I was too emotionally invested to take non-blurred photos or notes. But, in Steve’s words, “Everybody is a priority to somebody”. So, listen. Don’t judge. Ask questions. Say the word “suicide”. And, hopefully, save a life. Oh, and book Steve. His words will stay with me for a long time to come. I've noticed an interesting thing with the current crop of clients I'm coaching. At various times, around various issues, all they've needed is permission. - Permission to say no. - Permission to attend to their own needs. - Permission to put down the various instruments of self-flagellation. - Permission to manage their time according to their own needs. - Permission to speak up. - Permission to speak out. - Permission to rest. That last one is key; it's something I still haven't completely conquered myself. But the current theme that runs through all of these examples is that they're all things you don't actually need permission for – you've just believed other people when they've told you that you do. And as soon as I suggest that there is almost nothing that you *have* to do, *should* do, *must* do, it changes everything. Yes, there are consequences when you don't do some things, but you get to choose whether or not you are willing to accept the consequences are not. You have a choice. And understanding that changes everything. #lifecoach #coaching #choices

I’m not selling advice: you’re buying revelation. Often clients come to me for advice. They know something needs to change but they don’t necessarily know what or how. So they ask if I can advise them on what to do. Which is understandable. After all, it’s a survival instinct. To be advised whether it is safe to cross the road. To be advised whether the apples are rotten. To be advised whether there is a tiger behind us. But what about being advised to quit our jobs? Keep quiet rather than speak up? How to deal with disaster? Advice is cheap. Hell, most people will willingly give it to you for free if you ask. And sometimes even when you don’t. But here’s the thing about other people’s advice: It’s about them. Not you. It assumes that what’s true of their lives is true of yours. It invites them to write their autobiography onto you. This renders you powerless. When what you need to feel is empowered. So as a Coach I don’t offer advice: I ask questions and listen deeply to your responses. So I can ask even better questions. Advice gives you someone else’s answers. Coaching helps you discover your own. Advice narrows down options. Coaching opens up possibilities. Advice absolves responsibility. Coaching empowers you to resume it. The adage goes that advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn’t. How much better then not to be told something we already know and wish we didn’t but to be invited to discover something we don’t and wish we did. I’ve been taking some time for myself...👇🏽 → Took a step back from socialising → Been trying not to overwork → Been focussing on healing my gut and doing my 10k daily steps → Been doing movement to specifically help my chronic back pain → Trying to build more structure in my days which I always find hard But... → Finding structure as a freelancer still eludes me → I'm stressed most days - if I'm not working I'm probably thinking about work → Sugar is my kryptonite → My back still hurts A reminder of the seen vs the unseen. Seen: I do 10k steps daily and pilates 4x a week ("wow she's so lucky she has time for that!") Unseen: I do this because my doctor told me I have the back strength of an elderly person Seen: I'm a successful freelancer and I love my career ("wow I wish I could work for myself!") Unseen: I am stressed every day even when I'm not working, and I struggle to make time for my friends And there's always an opportunity cost. Focusing on my health means I might miss out on social events. Prioritising my work sometimes means neglecting personal time. So in conclusion... → don't be fooled by people on the internet who appear to have everything together → balance is found in the acceptance of imperfection → it's actually really hard to accept imperfection sometimes and that's fine :)

Some Clients// Some clients remind you exactly why, what you do matters. I am so glad that many of mine send me wonderful messages to tell me how well their speech, ceremony poem/reading, and vows went, or how well their bespoke favours were received by their guests. Some clients, who need help with the delivery and pace of the poem, speech etc send me messages like "They couldn't have done it without me!" However, I know that they probably could to a certain extent, but as we all know it's often a time when there is so little head space to devote to something that you may have to work a little harder at. I see myself as the creative vehicle that they use to help get exactly what they want and that makes me so happy. A lot of my work involves a bit of teamwork, as I rely on the information that my clients give to me so that I can deliver these highly personalised pieces. To help extract the information, I send over a gorgeous prompt guide that helps trigger those all-important memories, important dates, idiosyncrasies, and so much more. Following this, the magic happens. This can not be done using AI, only a human can feel and gather the info in this emotional and creative way. What’s been on my mind recently is the power and potency of the relational. I work exclusively 1:1 with people, meaning we're in a dyad together that allows us time and space to be really seen and heard. This is what 'relational' means to me in the context of my work and clinic. How, even if we have conflicting viewpoints, or we disagree, we can bear witness to each other, and this seemingly has such important benefits not just to physical and t1d health, but to our complete sense of belonging and identity. Connection and space, that's where it's at. Being honest, when I first started doing this work, I felt a great need to tell you that:  1. I know it 2. that I should tell you I know it, and 3. that you can use that knowledge to go and do it   In a humbling way, what I've realised through working relationally, is that there's such power in opening yourself up to not knowing. Once you accept you don't know or there could be a different way or that you can change your mind, a space can open up for something other. This could be something creative, more left-field, unique, or scarier, or darker. But in this other, space can be created and you can give yourself permission to think differently. Through a t1d lens, this could be exploring your relationship with your body, or unrealising some of the beliefs you hold about what t1ds should do, or even addressing some of the shame you may feel living with this condition. This other space gives us other options - the freedom to try. And succeed. And fail. And re-think.  And the thing about nutrition is that what we believe to be 'true' can change with further research. It's an evolving evidence base. We must hold it with seriousness, but also hold it loosely. Another aspect of this work, is that we both come to the sessions on an equal footing. Locking arms and joining forces. I really value what you're bringing to the table. This is your condition. I have my own experience that I can add and often do. Fundamentally, this is about partnership. This often shifts expectations around the power dynamic you may expect or have experienced in a different healthcare setting. I will always offer up recommendations and gentle guidance, and you will be rooted in the heart centre of these. They are delicately crafted for your unique self. I don't use a fixed protocol that all my clients undergo. And hey, if something isn't working for you, we change it. You may have an expectation of what working with me looks like in terms of success or achievement. That might be a lowered hba1c, or an improved food relationship, or another tangible goal. I'd love to guarantee that for you. Sadly there are no givens on that front. But what I can 100% guarantee you'll get working from me is connection, space, and a prioritisation of the relational. A space to look into the other. And to do this in collaboration with me. And most times, if we prioritise the relational (a given), the other achievements can come later.
