How can you make sure your R&D projects are unique and innovative?
Building on what others here have said, a decision tree with probabilities assigned to the branches can be a simple way to map out pathways. The probabilities can be updated as new information is gathered or created. Think Bayes. Be thoughtful, what does the probability mean? Is it a likelihood of successful completion? Or a likelihood of choosing that path? Once this is a well practiced habit one can easily integrate questions like “what does success look like?” and “what will the ROI be?” and “how does this change willingness to pay?” and “how does this pathway contribute to our innovation capacity or velocity, or open new innovation space?”. Throughout, this naturally maps your learning process too!

How can you make sure your R&D projects are unique and innovative?
There is a nice bit of whole value chain innovation process! I’d add from my experience in academia, education, startups, and innovation analysis: A lot of friction in the process can be avoided by good record keeping as you go. Never plan to write it up later, train yourself and your team to make it good enough as they perform the work. Of course, one still summarises separately at appropriate milestones for reflection and reporting. Consider open lab books to synthesise team work and individual work into a more creative whole. Share work early without judgement for greatest transparency and growth opportunity. Practice immediacy and radical candour. You didn’t break it, it got broken, and why? How do we avoid that in future?

Superconductivity in the intercalated graphite compounds C6Yb and C6Ca
Nature Physics
Low dimensionality is generally considered as a necessary ingredient for high superconducting transition temperatures. Surprisingly, perhaps, systems based on graphite1, 2, 3 have received little attention in this context. Introducing metal atoms between the carbon layers can tune the interlayer spacing and charging of the graphite host through a variety of electronic ground states. One such ground state is superconductivity3, which is not present in pure graphite. Here we report the discovery…

Introducing metal atoms between the carbon layers can tune the interlayer spacing and charging of the graphite host through a variety of electronic ground states. One such ground state is superconductivity3, which is not present in pure graphite. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity in the intercalation compounds C6Yb and C6Ca, with transition temperatures of 6.5 and 11.5 K, respectively.
