How to identify the right ‘spans of control’ for your organization
McKinsey.com
Throughout the 20th century, many organizations chased the notion of finding and using one ideal universal “span of control” (SOC)—the magic number of employees a manager could oversee to achieve optimal effectiveness and efficiency. However, over decades of supporting the world’s leading organizations in their redesign experiences, McKinsey has found that there is no single magic number that fits all types of managers and the work that they do. By linking and analysing routinely collected data, such as Cancer Registry data and Hospital Episode Statistics, it allows mapping of the cancer journey from diagnosis to death or continued survival, describing the health outcomes that patients experience. This can include survival times as well as the rate and frequency of cancer, and non-cancer related morbidities.
The approach also let us see how the frequency and rate of cancer diagnoses is affecting the health care system, for example the length of time patients spend in hospital, when they access a health care service, and how much this costs.
