“Sunit is a gifted and insightful senior IT professional. When I worked with Sunit he always saw the bigger picture; and the business need for any IT solution, project or programme; while still being delivery and process minded. He has since gone onto greater things but would be an asset to any forward thinking IT organisation.”

How can you lead change as a change agent or sponsor?
Communicate, communicate, communicate. In various forums, in 1-2-1s, in team meetings, using printed materials, allowing 2-way discussions and Q&A. The more familiar the change language and projects become, the more understanding and buy-in it will generate. When you are tired of repeating the same message THAT is when recipients will start to understand it. A tipping point will be reached when everybody is talking about the change, but don’t stop communicating there – talk about progress, short term wins, great examples that have been netted, medium term wins, changed KPIs/CSFs, reward and recognise individuals who demonstrate the new ways of working, and watch out for any reversions back to the old way of doing things.

How can you lead change as a change agent or sponsor?
Build your guiding coalition to lead, coordinate, and communicate the change ambition and activities. Their buy-in and commitment is so, so important. They should be cohesive and be able to challenge one another in steering meetings to end up with agreement they all buy into. They will act as change agents to go out an enlist and engage advocates in your business. There will also be neutrals and cynics in your business, and there is a beauty in turning neutrals into advocates, and even more so if you turn vocal-cynics into neutrals vocal advocates.

How can you lead change as a change agent or sponsor?
First things first - ask lots of questions: What is the smoking-gun? The burning-bridge? The imperative to transform or pivot? Is it a new threat or opportunity? Or is it simply the next phase in an already established change programme? If it is the next phase in a change programme, have you allowed the previous phase to settle down and become the new normal? Or are you considering a continuous change model as opposed to punctuated-equilibrium? Be really clear on why, why, why are you considering a change. Then, with a resolute mind you can commence the assessment, approach, guiding coalition and impact-analysis
