Are you a filmmaker or part of a film production company, then claiming Film Tax Relief (FTR) must be a part of your funding strategy. Film tax relief is available for British qualifying films if they: either pass the cultural test: This is an easy process. You only need 18 points to qualify. They ask questions such as if the film is in English, the number of cast and crew who are British, locations in the UK, if the theme of the script is British. My current application has 39 points and that is only because it is not fully crewed: Qualify as an official co-production: Intended for theatrical release: Have a minimum UK core spend requirement of 10%, including those made under official co-production treaties. Tax relief is available on qualifying UK production expenditure on the lower of either 80% of total core expenditure or the actual UK core expenditure incurred. There is no cap on the amount which can be claimed. The film production company responsible for the film needs to be within the UK Corporation Tax net. There are several companies who will advance up to 90% of the Film Tax Credit prior to the start of your production to ease cashflow. My prediction on how this years elections will signal a new era in audience first broadcasting I believe this is the election year where every broadcaster will be vying to showcase the sentiment of the UK. With the UK election date scheduled for 4th of July, plans are now being kicked into action to capture the attention of the nation through their coverage. Here’s some of the ingredients with how I think it should play out to keep the attention span: 1. Real-Time HTML Graphics: Using HTML graphics with real-time data is crucial for keeping the audience engaged. This approach provides up-to-the-minute updates and visual excitement. 2. Interactive Polls: Running live polls allows the viewing public to predict election outcomes, transforming passive viewers into interactive participants. I have good news.. It has been a very rough time for TV production in the UK and across Europe these past few months. I have witnessed first-hand the struggles of production companies, with the lack of commissions, uncertainty in the industry and cost-cutting across the board. This isn’t just about programmes not coming back - it's about the talented and hard-working freelancers and production staff at the heart of TV production not being re-engaged through no fault of their own. But back to that good news. In discussions with production company and studio clients in the last few weeks, I’m seeing definite signs of positivity and optimism, as more commissions start to come through and the networks find new innovative ways to fund programmes. I am not saying we’re fully on the road to recovery, but there are definite green shoots there. I am proud to work on a casting product that helps productions save money, meaning more of the budget can be spent on other parts of the show. Those clients who have worked with Cast It Reach, and dealt with me over the last two years will hopefully agree that we aim to be as flexible on price as possible, and always look to provide a cost-effective solution. As we enter the holiday season, as a small business owner it can be extremely hard to allow yourself to take a break and disconnect. Being 'always digitally on' running a niche interactive broadcast consultancy had become the norm for me for many years which meant that when I have taken a holiday I always was connected to the job and more often than not didn't come back refreshed. Technology plays a huge part of my consultancy but sometimes being too connected becomes prohibitive. Notifications are on multiple devices and for me, disconnecting completely on trips away has been extremely challenging. Here are some of the things I have done to try and disconnect from tech whilst on a break, to actually come back feeling recharged as a small business owner. 💠 Laptop Hibernation - I habitually get my laptop out on a daily basis. I try not to even open it when away and save it for only emergencies. Yes, I take it but am mindful of when of if or when I NEED to open it. 💠 No Phone Days/Hours - Can you leave your phone in the room/apartment for a few hours or even a day whilst you are out and about? I genuinely find this extremely hard but it does feel freeing once you execute this. 💠 Clients Can Wait - Put a detailed and more personal out of office on that explains you are away but make it more personal than 'I'm on leave and back on x date' 💠 Create a Different Routine - Try not to fall into checking your phone or laptop first thing in the morning on holiday. Go outside, take a walk, breathe in the different surroundings. Change up the usual. 💠 Blue Sky Thinking - Try and trade your mindset to thinking that whilst you are away and not being as connected it will allow for fresh approaches and ideas to populate in your mind to help fuel new business approaches when you return.
