Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) are facing growing pressures from stakeholders to address global challenges and to alleviate inequalities faced by disadvantaged communities in the regions where they operate. This thematic literature review chapter in the AIB UKI 2024 Book by Renan Oliveira, Ph.D, Jayne Cathcart, Prof Axele Giroud, Prof Jorge Carneiro and Prof Pervez N. Ghauri seeks to uncover existing knowledge in the IB, wider management literature and closely related fields—economics and development studies—to understand how MNEs interact with disadvantaged communities in emerging markets. Since several of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are concerned with addressing the needs of disadvantaged communities, this study explores the potential for MNEs to contribute to the achievement of the #SDGs, and in particular #SDG8 (Decent work and economic development). New short article on the youth vote (18-24) at the 2024 General Election by Matt Henn and myself for the excellent Election Analysis 2024 report with an amazing array of other academic authors. In it we describe: 1. The 'youthquake' in support for the progressive parties (especially amongst young women and students - 23% of young women voted Green!). 2. The collapse of the Conservative vote (from 30% in 2010, to 20% in 2019 to 8% in 2024). 3. Youth support for Labour (41%) as 'shallow' - a significant amount of young people (16%) migrated to the Greens and Lib Dems through the campaign. 4. Decrease in support for Labour + Conservatives combined - from over three-quarters in 2019 (76%) to under a half (49%) in 2024. We attribute Labour's shallow support amongst young people as a failure to communicate (centre-stage) with young people over what the policies in the manifesto e.g. Green jobs, Young Futures hubs, would mean to them as well as a failure to develop a cohesive youth offer e.g. housing, mental health, the environment, youth services. Bond markets are curently rattled by the idea of a far-right new french government running the country with a protectionist and costly programme.. Accordig to the Financial Times, "rivals from president Emmanuel Macron’s centrist party have already pounced, warning that a debt crisis like the UK gilt market turmoil in 2022 could ensue if they end up in a power-sharing situation with the RN, similar to the fallout from the former British leader’s plans for billions of unfunded tax cuts. The impact from the RN’s unfunded spending would be twice as painful as what might have happened under Truss, blowing out France’s deficit to economic output ratio by an extra 3.9 percentage points a year, according to consultancy Asterès." https://lnkd.in/ebhq75up

Very happy to share that our article is now published Open Access today at the Journal of Chinese Political Science! "Reassessing the Impact of China’s Belt and Road Initiative: A Mixed Methods Approach" (1) Our article re-evaluates the impact of the Belt and Road Initiative by examining important macroeconomic linkages between China and other economies. Combining statistical analyses of 163 countries, alongside EU case studies. (2) Our mixed-methods approach, analysing over a decade of cross-national data and case studies, presents a novel reassessment of China’s BRI project. We show that the BRI's true economic influence has been more modest than its scale and ambition have often implied. Accepted paper: Do corporate governance mechanisms effectively mitigate the opportunistic use of #CSR? New research by Mohammad Abweny, Godfred Afrifa, PhD & Abdullah Iqbal reveals that they do and enhance CSR credibility. My newest article (in fact, the 50th published article). "The trilateral summit’s (China-ROK-Japan) impact on East Asia’s geopolitics should neither be exaggerated nor downplayed. Though the United States continues to advocate for China and other revisionist countries’ return to the so-called "rules-based international order," a more realistic outcome may be establishing a "rules-based competitive order." Under this context, East Asia’s trilateral summit is a complementary pillar to what some have described as a “new Cold War” international system." "The U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan described current U.S. policy toward China as establishing a “small yard, high fence.” The success of the East Asia trilateral summit may be one indicator of the effectiveness of the U.S. strategy, supporting its allies in balancing selective partnership and confrontation with China. It is a challenging balance, but it may be a crucial factor in shaping whether today’s international system will be more or less stable and managed than the previous Cold War order."

I am very pleased to see that Member States propose to include Research Actions in FP10 to complement Research & Innovation Actions and Innovation Actions. The University Alliance Stockholm Trio was one of the first to propose this in February 2023: 'The Trion RECOMMENDs the Commission to keep challenge based topics, and add Research Actions with an open scope (non-prescriptive approach) to capture researchers’ and other actors’ creativity in defining and searching for solutions'. Research Actions swill strongly contribute to laying the ground for future innovations. The call for papers for the April 2025 Cambridge Disinformation Summit will open late next month. The theme will be: “Research on the efficacy of disinformation interventions.” Submissions will be considered from any disciplines that explore potential interventions that might include, but are not limited to: —governance frameworks —understanding of and potential interventions that relate to disinformation actors —understanding of and potential interventions that relate to disinformation incentives —understanding of and potential interventions that relate to dissemination channels —understanding of and potential interventions that relate to targeted vulnerable audiences —accountability for harms from disinformation campaigns —viability of technology to support interventions. Ten to twelve papers will be selected by the scientific committee to be invited for presentation at the events in Cambridge UK. Priority will be given to newer working papers that can both inform and be informed by the Summit’s interdisciplinary audience.
