What are the challenges of longitudinal studies in education?
One of the challenges, from a qualitative social science perspective, is consistency and continuity of longitudinal data. I'm looking at a case of societal transformation over a 30-40 year period, based on oral histories that are few but rich. This has led to questions of methodological rigour, etc. I find research designs like historical narrative and extended case method are flexible to incorporating various 'parts of the story' across time, space and levels of analysis, coupled with triangulated data and concepts.
