ADHD diagnosis - what is it? What does it give you? Is it worth it? In this episode, I discuss ADHD diagnosis - what is is, what it isn't and my own ongoing journey to get an official ADHD diagnosis through the NHS system! While initially feeling the need for a "rubber stamp", the lack of a formal diagnosis has become less of an issue for me over time. I recorded this episode to share some insights with you that have helped me get where I am now, such as looking beyond the typical symptom lists and dismantling descriptions like "carelessness" and "inability to focus." I highlight some less-discussed aspects of how ADHD can manifest, such as differences in communication style, struggles with social cues, sensory issues, difficulties listening to bodily cues, and challenges with emotional regulation. I also examine ADHD strengths, for example the ability to hyperfocus on passionate interests, risk-taking that allows innovative ideas to emerge, deep empathy and intuition. I briefly weigh some potential pros and cons around pursuing an official ADHD assessment, for example access to medication and workplace accommodations. Overall, my aim is to provide a different perspective on how ADHD shows up in real life. As the episodes and our listenership builds it's time to get to know me a little bit better, so today's episode is (some of) my story. I talk about my first self-created identity and a couple of powerful childhood experiences. These I have come to realise shaped my BluePrint, and therefore how I thought and acted for decades. Think about that. An 11 year-old's reaction shaped my thoughts and behaviours for decades. I also speak about my 20 year professional career which I hated and felt trapped in, and I talk about the people and events that set me on this adventure to write my own BluePrint and create the life I really want to live. This is a very different story to the one told by my co-host, Lisa Maniatis, over the last two episodes (I highly recommend listening to those episodes as well) and as a result we also discuss "comparative suffering" and the impact it can have in diminishing our felt right to feel bad about our situation. And if we don't feel we have the right to feel bad about something then how can we possibly entertain the idea we deserve something better, let alone take the action required to create it? Our intention with these conversations is to provide a different perspective and lens through which you can view your own lives.
