🔥🍴 Intel Ignite is still relatively new to the UK tech scene and we're keen to understand more about the VC ecosystem so last week we conducted an experiment. We hosted a dinner for a small group of investors to see what would happen. How open would people be in sharing their experiences? What are the things we can learn from each other? Would people even turn up? I can report that the event was overwhelmingly positive; conversations were flowing, everyone was engaged, we got to know each other personally, insights and lessons learnt were shared and above all, it was a fun time! Some of the things we talked about: 🛰 The rise of defence tech and dual-use investing, plus the increased amount of spacetech deal flow we’re seeing. 😇 Angel investing when you work at a fund. Is it allowed, and if so, can you only invest in companies outside of your fund’s thesis or does the fund get the right of first refusal on those deals? How do you handle conflicts of interest? 🐲 We talked about the incredible impact of DragonChasers, the community for emerging managers to find the right investors and helping LPs from around the world find the right European ventures funds to invest into. 💰 Ofer Shayo shared the story of how his start-up got acquired. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t easy at all. It was an intricate process where there were a lot of moving pieces. We also shared tactical tips with each other including how to engage with student entrepreneurs and university spin-outs, and how we conduct first calls with founders! “Navigating User Appeals in a DSA” #TSPASummit Running notes (bear with me!) Jennifer Smith Kevin Koehler Paul O'Connell Ollie Irwin Rachel Roschelle The complexity with investigations to appropriately handle appeal requests requires a bit of new thinking. * new stakeholders * new designs * new workflows * information needed vs appropriate access to data * understanding the adjustment period of time and working with the ODS and API/data sharing * Oversight Board gets about 600K to 1m appeals * The scale of successful operations is still defining itself * false positive reports and spam impact and distract from human rights needs, and how OBS is looking to distract bad actors from flooding appeal reviews (ex potential monetary charge to avoid erroneous submissions) * interacting with external DSA obligation parties — still theoretical as operations build process. Convo is still “how to do this at scale.” * Engagement is key with regulators and various impacting parties * Openly sharing and discussing what is working and not working - collaboration with ODS in the name of transparency is ideal. * Meet policy people to help give open feedback for iteration * PanNational is really important to avoid too many cooks in the kitchen directives * META brings human rights reps to the table to discuss appeals * elections and censorship is hyper sensitive and not where DSA wants to go. * Independent ODS bodies who are independent and unaligned with governed or political ongoings * How do you share the right data? How do you resolve complexity without over exposure? Prioritization via text analysis can help improve accuracy and volume. Helps drive inclusion of humans in the review process scalable. * wishlist items for engineering: improved language models, video context improvement (magnitude), video-to-text translation for easier review, improved video review to remove extreme exposure (and new clever features) * How does DSA impact the layoffs and staffing demands needs for companies: focus on learnings + automations, but iteration and emerging tech products. Regulatory impact has expanded opportunities for careers and development. It does make Moderation fundamentally more expensive - due to compliance AND more necessary to do business in the EDU. Can’t cut human protection first just because it costs. User safety and best interests are at forefront needs. One of the narratives coming out of this weeks UK General Election is a question around the 'first past the post' voting system, and the games of which seats to contest for the party; and if and how to tactical vote for the voter. A quick look at the numbers show that there is a significant variation in how many votes it took to secure each Member of Parliament. From 23,605 for Labour to 485,305 for Green and 820,745 for Reform. A 2011 referendum rejected a change in the voting system, but this came after the 2010 General Election in which the top 3 parties by seats secured 88.1% of the vote. This week the top 3 parties by seats secured just 69.7% of the votes - 7 parties would need to reach 90.1% of the vote share. A convenient flaw in our democratic system saves today but promises far greater problems tomorrow. I've got mixed feelings about the UK elections. Despite Labour beating the Tories, this is just the start of our slide towards the right. Data: - Labour: 412 seats from 9.8m votes - Reform: 5 seats from 4.1m votes - Lib Dems: 71 seats from 3.5m votes Takeouts: - There’s no clear relationship between votes and seats. - Nearly half as many people voted Reform as voted Labour yet Reform have 1% of representatives. - More people voted for Reform than Lib Dems, yet Lib Dems get 15x more representatives. - Although Labour and Lib Dems grew, Reform party is effectively less than a year old. The central idea behind Reform is that the political system doesn't work for the real people, politicians aren't listening to normal folk and the media only amplify voices in the elite bubble. This is why people (c. 1 in 7 voters) voted for Reform. The election itself could not be a clearer proof of the argument and will grow support for the cause. In France c. 1 in 3 voters support far right extremists not because 1/3 of French people are racist but because they reject politics as they know it. Suppressing this movement might work for now, but history shows you just can't ignore the will of the people forever and call yourself a democracy. Either we change the system and release the pressure. Or let the pressure build up and release itself as it is doing across much of Europe and in the US, where more than 1 in 2 will vote for Trump. In both places order is being replaced with chaos. How ironic that Reform voters now share so much common ground with so many foreigners. A fragmented mob is taking over. BBC data below:

100 APPLICATIONS 😍 In just 24 hours we've had 100 applications for our first Product Manager/Product Owner role. If you haven't applied yet, don't fret - Oliver Horlyck and I are reading every single one still, and will be for at least another week or so. So suggest getting your application in this week 👍 Also - based on what we've reviewed so far - here's some stats and a bit of gratuitous advice that may help you shine through: 💡 75% of applications chose to answer each question (including Optional). This gives them a better chance to speak to their strengths, and doesn't give us a 'Can they be bothered?' impression seeing the blanks. 📌 My advice: answer all the questions, even if it's just a sentence or two 💡 About 20% have used ChatGPT significantly. There's been no silly 'as a large language model...' style errors, but when reading 100 applications side-by-side, you actually see the same responses and same styles again and again. 📌My advice: we view a tiny bit of ChatGPT with no issue, but when seeing it across multiple answers we'll filter that application out. 💡Around 25% applied and then sent me a linkedin message. There's broadly fall into 2 groups: ▶ 50% of these were concise and human-like messages, e.g. 'Hi Elliott, I just applied, I think i'm a good fit because of [reason]. Hope to chat soon'. 📌these were viewed slightly positively, although we are not necessarily noting them against the response list ▶ 50% were long, robotic, or felt ChatGPT scripted. 📌These were viewed negatively. 💡 Separately, about 20 candidates sent me a message on LinkedIn before applying. ▶ 5 of these were useful, e.g. they'd previously worked with myself or a member of the team, and wanted to say hi to note their application was coming. (all of these were told to put their application in) ▶ 15 were not useful. They were long, robotic, or felt ChatGPT scripted. I replied to most of these and told them to put an application in anyway to assess it. 📌My advice: If you're going to message on linkedin, make it meaningful. (for example, draw a connection to someone we have in common at the minimum!). Also, preferably message after you've put the application in, so we have something to look at rather than just saying thanks.

Political change is almost here but what does the future hold for UK startups? No one knows for sure, but startups must be a crucial part of any new government's agenda. Thankfully, Dom Hallas and the team at the Startup Coalition have produced a comprehensive Startup Manifesto to guide our new leaders on what needs to be done. With the UK ranking third globally for VC investment, our AI sector valued at £72bn and our ClimateTech sector worth over £26bn, there’s plenty to suggest we're on the right path. But there's so much more to address – across talent, funding, regulation, and innovation. 📈 So that British startups can remain competitive at the forefront of the global tech revolution. 🌍 Have a read of the full manifesto below and do your bit to promote it, so that whoever is in charge on Friday hears about it too. 📢
