National Grid ESO have published their Future Energy Scenarios (FES) pathways today, which have evolved from 'scenarios' to explore narrower ranges and strategic, credible choices to propel us on the route to #decarbonisation. Amongst the pathways and proposed actions, there is one key message: "Decisive action is needed within the next two years to deliver the fundamental change required for a fair, affordable, sustainable and secure net zero energy system by 2050." In collaboration with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, we adopted an explainable, data-driven approach to to create an explainable AI solution to identify factors that can lead to energy poverty in different UK regions.  This project is vital given the vast changes and innovations occurring within the energy sector. National Grid has published its Principles for a fair transition. Last year National Grid commissioned us to facilitate a series of stakeholder roundtables with representation from industry, unions, charities, regulators, and government, as well as members of the public, particularly underrepresented groups, to hear what this overhaul of the energy system might look like. National Grid will apply the principles in practice by Engaging with communities Sharing knowledge with others Supporting an affordable energy transition Accelerating social mobility in the communities they serve Reflecting the communities they serve They will also Aim for 35% female representation and 20% ethnicity in our management population by 2025, Aim for 50% female representation and 40% ethnicity in our new talent population by 2025, Aim for 50% diversity of our Group Executive by 2025 including but not limited to a focus on gender and ethnicity. The UK's renewable energy projects face major hurdles due to grid connection issues, a recent Environmental Audit Committee report reveals. Key challenges include slow connections, limited capacity, poor planning regulations, and market uncertainty. With a queue more than double what's needed for the 2035 decarbonisation target, these obstacles could seriously impede progress. Ofgem and the Electricity System Operator (ESO) have set milestones like securing planning permission to speed up connections, but these have yet to reduce the queue. The Committee urges the government and Ofgem to review and streamline these initiatives, prioritizing ready-to-connect projects. The planning system also poses a bottleneck, lacking resources and expertise within local authorities. The report recommends the government support local authorities with necessary personnel and knowledge to expedite planning decisions and engage with communities. Energy storage facilities and long-term storage needs were also highlighted. The government must address these barriers through investment or policy reforms. Philip Dunne MP emphasized the ambitious goal to decarbonise the electricity grid by 2035, calling for extensive planning, coordination, and substantial private investment. He welcomed National Grid’s £30 billion investment but stressed the need for ongoing efforts across the energy system to achieve net zero emissions. In conclusion, while grid connection challenges are evident, progress is possible with the right strategies and collaboration. Great British Energy which will be launched in the next 2 months will offer the following benefits for Domestic customers. Based on what has been published so far, GB Energy aims to: Lower energy bills for every household by an average of £300 a year. Increase energy security by reducing the UK’s reliance on imported fossil fuels from countries like Norway, Qatar, the US and Russia. Take on the challenge of delivering green electricity by 2030, through increased use of renewable energy sources. Create 650,000 new jobs in all parts of the UK through local energy generation. You can see a regional breakdown of new jobs on the Great British Energy website. How will GB Energy be funded? GB Energy is part of the new government’s Green Prosperity Plan, which it says will be funded by two sources: an increased windfall tax on oil and gas companies (£1.2 billion over the course of the parliament) Responsible borrowing When the government says responsible borrowing, this investment will cost billions and billions so an Increase in Non-commodity costs 100% will happen also. Remember 65% of the customers Electricity delivered price is this element and will increase. A new article by the Financial Times explains the issues amassing as part of Britain’s clean energy transition: “Sixty-three per cent of the roughly 4,000 applications submitted for wind, solar and battery projects between 2018 and 2023 have been refused, abandoned, withdrawn or had their planning permission expire, according to Cornwall Insight, an energy consultancy.  A further 18 per cent have been sent back for revision, leaving only a fifth of projects either waiting for a planning decision or ready to be built.” While renewables will play a crucial role in the fight against climate change, these problems highlight the need for energy saving alongside the clean transition. Furthermore, demand side response and time of day tariffs are best paired with granular energy data. Yumann said: “With an emerging skills gap of 750,000 new workers needed to reach Net Zero by 2050, the YEP Forum has launched a survey to capture insight on young professionals' experience of working within the energy industry." She added: "Focusing on what works, what doesn't work and how we can improve, the survey aims to gather tangible evidence on how to better attract and retain talented people to build long careers in this sector. Anyone with up to 10 years of experience can take part.” While the DCC smart metering network certainly has a pivotal role to play in the UK reaching #NetZero, the whole energy sector needs to rise to the challenge if we’re to protect our planet. We're seeing an almighty crunch for connections to the electricity grid in GB. Transmission investment has not kept up with demand and the first-come, first serve process for allocating connections has no way of resolving oversubscription and also gives unhelpful ‘hoarding’ incentives. https://lnkd.in/eivewX3m SSE plc is engaging with National Grid ESO's 'First ready, first connected' reform initiative ('TMO4+' in technical speak) and we think connections reforms should go further than that. Ofgem has set out a framework for Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment and Government has decided we will have a Strategic Spatial Energy Plan, centrally coordinating the location of grid and generation investments to speed up delivery. Reform of the connections process should bank that progress and build on it as we set out in this short paper (reflecting the interests of both SSE’s network and generating businesses).

This annual report delivers a comprehensive analysis of the potential future of the UK's energy system, guiding strategic planning and policy decisions towards achieving net zero. While last year's scenarios explored a wide range of outcomes, this year's pathways are aligned to decarbonise at the same pace, aiming for net zero by 2050.
