Supercell globally launched Squad Busters last week, its first new game in 5 years. Here are some insights into its launch, according to data from AppMagic and Sensor Tower: 🔸 The game generated $1.1M on launch day alone and has generated an overall $9M+ in revenue since its launch. 🔹 On launch day, the United States was the top revenue generator for the game, followed by Germany and France.  🔸 The game currently has 19M+ downloads, with the United States, Indonesia, Brazil, and South Korea taking up the top 4 spots. 🔹 On a 5 star rating scale, the game currently has a 4.1 stars on the Apple App Store (~27K ratings) and 3 stars on the Google Play Store (~130K ratings). For reference, Supercell’s last global launch, Brawl Stars, generated $340K in revenue and 2M downloads when it was released on December 12th, 2018. ‘Phygital’ truly must be the worst word and one of the least valuable innovations out of web3. Adding an NFC chip to merch to claim an accompanying NFT does nothing for anyone. It’s a nice gimmick, but how does it generate value or improve the experience of wearing a branded shirt? Typically it doesn’t. Sometimes we tend to overengineer things to try to make web3 work in places where it’s not needed. Hats have the utility of blocking the sun from my skin or covering up my hair when I don’t have time to style it in the morning. And that value is plenty for me without needing to have an NFT to prove ownership of that hat for friends on the Internet. Moral of the story: not everything needs to be an NFT, and rather than coming up with arbitrary use cases for the tech, we should aim for delivering real, tangible value. There are some obvious examples I exclude from this involving high-value asset proof-of-ownership (wine, collectibles, etc), but everything else is dumb imo. If you think I’m wrong tell me why. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗯𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘀 recently shuttered their Web3 loyalty program Odyssey. There are murmurs out there that 𝗡𝗶𝗸𝗲 are taking steps to reduce resources in their Digital unit. 𝗣𝗲𝗽𝘀𝗶 & 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝘄𝗲𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿 have both launched unsuccessful NFT campaigns. A 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 number of sports teams have launched failed Web3 propositions and partnerships. Yesterday Stripe, where 1% of global GDP flows through, announced that crypto payments were coming back - 6 years after sunsetting the pay-by-crypto option. Merchants will receive fiat, not crypto, if consumers choose to via the stablecoin USDC on the Ethereum, Poygon and Solana blockchains. 🧠 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀: 1. That has to change in the next 5-10 years and has to inverse a decade from now.

In the podcast episode below, Peter McCormack talks to Casey Rodarmor, creator of Ordinals, Inscriptions ("NFTs"), and Runes ("fungible tokens") on #Bitcoin.⚡ 💡They talk Ordinals theory (and a lot of heavy technical stuff on how it works) 💥Is it breakable (eg. will upgrades on a protocol level ever put Ordinals at risk?) ⛏️Mining ethics (eg. is it okay for mining pools to arbitrarily "filter" out transactions?) Last Bitcoin Pizza Day, I met with a local group of Ordinals enthusiasts and learned they weren't familiar with the in-fighting and debates regarding putting jpegs on-chain. I personally get excited when I hear about new use cases like this for Bitcoin, as much as I understand the conservative position of sticking to payments and store-of-value. Interesting that two of the largest fund raises over the past few weeks are for layer-1 blockchain builders. Berachain announced on Friday that it closed a $100m round led by Framework Ventures and the Abu Dhabi branch of Brevan Howard Digital. Just a few days earlier, Monad Labs announced that it had finalized a $225 million round led by Paradigm. These are big rounds, and the timing and size suggests that venture investors are still betting on engine builders. While I’m sure public-facing applications are also getting some funding, I haven’t seen them get this size of allocation.
