With the Hartlepool site scheduled to close in two years, exploring alternatives to replace the current nuclear power supply is crucial. One promising option is the installation of a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) fleet. SMRs offer several advantages over traditional nuclear new builds (NNBs), including lower costs, increased flexibility, and shorter construction timelines. This makes them an attractive solution for ensuring a continuous and reliable power supply once Hartlepool ceases operations. Beyond merely replacing the power output of the Hartlepool site, adopting SMR technology offers additional strategic benefits. SMRs can be integrated into broader energy infrastructure plans, such as the production of hydrogen. This is particularly relevant given the ambitious plans for the East Coast Cluster, which aims to become a leading hub for low-carbon industrial processes and hydrogen production in the UK. By incorporating SMRs into the East Coast Cluster, the region could leverage this advanced technology to produce clean hydrogen efficiently, supporting both energy and industrial decarbonisation goals. A lovely article to mark the end of Ratcliffe's Coal Power Station as the turbines are due to stop later this year, the last operational Coal Power Station in the UK. It has been open since 1968, and I still so often see Ratcliffe mentioned on peoples CVs, from times they worked or attended training courses there. A really interesting study by Cornwall Insight's Renewables Pipeline Tracker shows that the vast majority of applications fail to get through planning. In total, over 60% of projects are either abandoned, refused, withdrawn, or expired. On top of that, the data reveals that only 20% remain in the development status, which means the planning application has been submitted, or they are awaiting/in construction. We often hear about how the total capacity of projects in the pipeline is enough to exceed what is necessary for us to reach net-zero generation. However, with these shortcomings, we are a long way off, which is concerning. Burning the full range of coal at this plant led to increased temperature, causing excessive slagging in the boiler. Regularly blasting the build-up was time-consuming and inefficient, and replacing parts damaged by the erosive effect of water and ash was costly and time-consuming. Technical Boilerhouse Risk Assessment, not a job for one person. With over 20 years of experience in steam systems, I believe that creating a suitable and sufficient TBHRA requires a collaboration of people from different areas of a business. Health and safety, Production, Operators and Engineers should all be involved. But without specialist knowledge of steam generation, water treatment and pipework design things can still be missed. Including an experienced steam engineer in the process who can advise on best practice, steam specific risks and how these can be mitigated will help. The resultant TBHRA will show manning levels and frequency of attendance, daily, weekly, monthly and less frequent checks that should be carried out. This will all achieve a safe reliable and efficient boilerhouse, protecting personnel and equipment into the future…. #byworthboilers #steamboilers #training #boilertraining #riskassessment

After months of hard work, today the team at HydroGenus submitted projects to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) second Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR2) in pursuit of Hydrogen Production Business Model support. New build hydrogen production facilities are proposed to serve business and transport needs in Aberdeenshire, County Durham and Lancashire. This will help deliver the switch to clean green hydrogen and support the growth of the local hydrogen economy.  These will each initially comprise 10 MWe of PEM electrolysers supplied with renewable electricity to produce low carbon hydrogen.  If given the go ahead for funding support by DESNZ, these facilities are expected to be commercially operational by the end of 2027. Their modular design means each facility can be scaled in future to meet additional local demand. The standard design also means it can be efficiently replicated to serve the many industrial and commercial estates across UK. #hydrogen #hydrogeneconomy #hydrogenUK
