Anonymity therapy: how a mask helps you reveal yourself. Experience of psychologist Diana Shumylo In times of war, many people experience heightened anxiety and mistrust. How can a psychologist create a safe space for a client in such conditions? Psychologist Diana Shumylo, who works as part of the Pact project, shares her experience using the innovative Anonymity Therapy technique, which helps clients open up and receive effective help. Diana says that people affected by war are always anxious, withdrawn, and do not trust anyone. To help them feel more comfortable, the psychologist suggests using a symbolic mask. "The mask gives a person a sense of protection and anonymity. It allows you to express your thoughts and feelings more sincerely," Diana explains. Thanks to this, the psychologist can get more accurate indicators when testing the level of anxiety and depression. The psychologist notes that this technique significantly accelerates the process of adaptation of the victims to new living conditions and helps them get over the traumatic experience faster. Even with a high level of anxiety, it is possible to successfully carry out the grounding technique and improve the internal state of a person. The victim himself must decide at what stage he is ready to remove the mask and communicate openly. The specialist's main task is to provide psychological help under any conditions while maintaining the client's anonymity and confidentiality. The experience of our psychologist shows that Anonymity Therapy is an effective tool in working with clients who have survived the traumatic experience of war. This technique helps to create an atmosphere of trust and security, which is critical for successful psychological care in today's challenging environment. *** Consultations are conducted within the program Complex Psychological Assistance to Children and Families Affected by War, which is implemented within the USAID project Development of a Sustainable Public Health System with the support of Pact and aims to provide psychological support to displaced persons — adults and children who have experienced trauma.

I recently came across this article about trigger warnings. At Mindsync EMDR Training we train therapists to be able to treat trauma memories using EMDR. The whole content of the training is triggering and trauma connected. As a training team myself and Caroline van Diest have often discussed whether we should give generic or specific trigger warnings so that people are prepared for the content. But it looks like this meta analysis showed that trigger warnings had no effect on an emotional response to the material. Actually they could increase anticipatory affect as people were on edge about when and what would be discussed! Interesting? What do you think? What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)? All our psychologists are trained in CBT & there is extensive scientific evidence showing its effectiveness. We've written a more detailed explanation on our website www.resolve.my/cbt/ but here's a quick summary: As the name suggests CBT is a combination of behavioural therapy and cognitive therapy. Behavioural therapy says that our behaviours are learned through interactions with our environment. If we change how we interact with the environment then we can change our behaviour and how we feel. Behavioural therapy gives us strategies such as: Systematic Desensitization: which helps us overcome fears by gradually exposing us to what we are afraid of. Positive reinforcement: which involves setting up a system that rewards the behaviour you want to see more of. Cognitive Therapy says that what we think about an event determines what we feel. For example, imagine you saw a friend at the mall and waved at them but instead of waving back they walked straight past you. If you thought ‘they deliberately ignored me’. You might feel upset and angry. However, if you thought ‘they didn’t see me’ then you would probably feel fine. Our past experiences determine our 'core beliefs' which change the way we interpret everyday events such as these. To change these core beliefs and improve our mood cognitive therapy uses strategies such as socratic questioning & behavioural experiments to help people re-evaluate their beliefs about the world and themselves. CBT combines behavoural and cognitive therapy in a way that improves strategies such as these. Unlike some other talking treatments, CBT deals with your current problems, rather than focusing on issues from your past (although it can be used to analyse the past if that's important to you). It's difficult to say how many hour long sessions you will need as it depends on the issues you are facing. The average is 6 to 8 sessions.
