Much to the surprise of no one, most conversations I have with customers these days are about GAI. I've been working in the talent space for a while now, and this is the first time I've seen such a rapid pace of change and discussion around new tech. Honestly, the sheer amount of information out there can be overwhelming. That's why it was so good to sit in on our recent audio event  AI in Action: Practical Applications for Recruiters https://lnkd.in/eMgtze6a.  where Ashvin Vaidyanathan, LinkedIn’s vice president of customer success and services, spoke with Faye Walshe, director of innovation and AI at Robert Walters, and Dan Schawbel Schawbel, managing partner of Workplace Intelligence. They all did an incredible job of breaking down how recruiters, in fact all of us can start leveraging GAI. I especially loved Dan's point about how GAI levels the playing field: Smaller staffing firms can scale more easily with fewer resources, while larger firms become leaner and more efficient. It's a win-win for productivity across the board. I highly recommend reading the article below for those who missed the event or want to want to dig into the practical tips for recruiters. Each year I eagerly await the release of the GSER, and this year's edition didn't disappoint. Neither the suggested policy changes nor the retort contain enough detail to assess if the methodology would survive first contact with reality, let alone a professional statistician such as you or an awesome employment lawyer such as Alex Harper. Whoever gets into power needs to get to work ASAP and: - Separate Equal Pay from Pay Gaps - Look at Equal Pay from a different direction maybe? Surely transparency will separate truth from apocryphal stories - Set the tone for fairness and collaboration rather than division and a never productive 'them and us' mentality And lastly, there needs to be a whole lot more coverage of a very very obvious fact that the majority of people have utterly failed to either speak or grasp: Work is closer to the end of the process than the start! By that I mean any given person would have been hugely influenced by their parents, siblings and friends, guided by education, limited by their circumstances and ultimately steered by themselves either through fear, balance, ignorance or over-confidence. This doesn't mean organisations can wash their hands, quite the opposite- they need to get a whole lot better at separating what they can't control from what they can - and sort it!

There are so many interesting discussions happening at London Tech Week. One founder, CEO, and investor discussion that has kept me thinking is "The Nuts and Bolts of Building Your Own Business" with panelists Gerard Grech, Tom Bohills, Chris Woodward-Jones and Galia Beer-Gabel. Here are some of the insights gained: 💡 The importance of engaging a coach early to help the founder “let go” of aspects of the business in preparation for scaling. 💡 The chances of success and survival are greater if you have a co-founder, and the benefits that come with having a co-pilot to digest and strategize your journey. 💡 Ensure that you are intentional and take the time to define your values as a founder. 💡 Recognise what you are and aren’t good at early on; find processes and people to fill the gaps. You can’t be everyone and everything all of the time. 💡Consider trademarking your business. 💡 It’s okay to be vulnerable - in fact, it’s really helpful, especially when leveraging the expertise of your board and advisors; it makes your product better. 💡 Recognise that you are one of many investments for your investors - use their time wisely. 💡 The growing pains of trusting the people you hire to do the building for you. 💡 Advocacy being a key marker of product-market fit. 💡 Choosing investors for your business that are compatible with you, beyond the funding that they offer. 💡 Key considerations in PMF - deciding to either swim in ‘red waters’ (i.e., bloody waters) where products are already available and your mission is to make your offering better, or go into entirely new markets. We’ve been looking deeply into the infrastructure and ecosystem around #digitalskills in UK education and anticipating what might be needed to address the skills shortage and youth underemployment, (or…. paint a realistic and genuinely exciting picture of future jobs for those coming into the workforce). Not just immediately but over the coming decade. It’s been a fascinating research sprint with the wonderful brains Kathryn Skelton Justin Spooner and the many more contributors and thought leaders. As with all of our social impact research, whilst it’s going to help us develop interventions we love to share far and wide so all boats rise. #digitalskills #education #youth #tech #socialmobility

Hiring from prestigeous organisations, pros and pitfalls. Here’s my article i recently published on Fast Company Working at unicorn startups or established powerhouses has given these “halo CV” applicants an edge beyond the prestige factor. Besides technical know-how, they’ve probably developed strategies to navigate high-pressure ecosystems that involve interacting with colleagues with equally impressive pedigrees. But should a halo résumé always rise to the top? In many cases, the right candidate may be hiding in plain sight, somewhere in the middle of the pile. Their work history may lack brand prestige, but it might indicate a skill set that features a broader if more eclectic, range of talents.

Chris Williamson (nobody doesn't not know him) and Oliver Burkeman in this podcast discuss the fundamentals. We are all shouting at 10000 feet that we don't really feel the ground. https://lnkd.in/gHH4n9-R My Key take aways - I want to just put the raw, unfiltered version as I took notes. Why people are obsessed with productivity: The Protestant work ethic: the idea that you should spend your life being industrious to be on the right side of God. Capitalism: the feeling that you need to constantly be achieving more to be successful. Psychotherapy: the idea that we are raised to prove ourselves to get love and acceptance. Countering negative thoughts: some people believe that feeling easy about accomplishing something means they didn't work hard enough. The value exchange with the world: the idea that if you are useful and valuable, then you will be accepted. Internal Tyrants and Insecure overachievers:  People who are driven by a deep sense of inadequacy and are not having fun even though they've achieved success. Cause and Effect no more. The effect is happening before the cause: people internalise the pressure to be productive and it becomes their own drive, even when it is not necessary. Loneliness is a kind of tax we have to pay to atone for a certain complexity of mind: complex people may find it harder to connect with others. Perfectionists almost always procrastinate. The 333 technique:  A productivity technique where you try to do three hours of your main creative work, three hours on maintenance activities, and three smaller tasks each day. Consistency is important, but not rigidity: being open to changing your systems and approaches over time. If your system punishes you for having “useful interruptions” then it is probably flawed whatsoever. More often than not, most groundbreaking events happen in spite of all the time boxing and planning, and not because of. We confuse busyness with productivity, but that is striving to be productive with no or less or incorrect prioritizing. Constantly working doesn't guarantee success. If something is a natural skill/ gift, you can spend less time and effort and perhaps focus more of the same on weak areas that deserve the kind of attention. Our obsession with productivity stems from various factors like the pressure to prove ourselves and the belief that we need to be constantly achieving more. Embracing limitations and focusing on what truly matters rather than striving for perfection. So now at work, are we anti-productive in the name of being productive? Perhaps that extends to life as well?

I love this. I’m lucky enough to have worked with big tech companies, lots of local authorities and also educational establishments. It’s always been the top tied gov and tech companies who actually said out loud “culture eats kindness”. I remember being in a room of leaders and developers who literally just spoke about flexible working and agile frameworks. I do think the image is accurate. I’m equally thinking what is culture? Some people refer to it as processes and clear communication channels. Other people think of it more as a soft touch. Some companies even go as far as shouting about their values to embed culture. I guess my question is, how do you define culture from a strategic point of view? What’s the secret formula? Is the weighting in HOW you work or is it based on WHY you work?
