Asking your fire protection company to install a fire alarm system without providing a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment (stating the category of fire alarm required) and building plans is like your GP writing a prescription which says “tablets”. “Tablets” doesn’t give the pharmacist enough information in order for them to dispense the solution to your problem. “Fire Alarm” doesn’t give us the information required to design and install a fire detection and alarm system that protects your building and occupants. We work in accordance with British Standards - we design, install, commission and certify fire alarm systems but only when the necessary information is provided. The team recently visited a care home to undertake a comprehensive Fire Risk Assessment for a new client. The original fire alarm system, from 1999, was a zoned system only, and the zone chart did not align with the building. More worryingly, the system had been in fault for six weeks, which was concerning considering the premises are a care home, one of the highest-risk premises out there. The first question we had to ask the client was whether they were complying with Article 17. —(1) Where necessary in order to safeguard the safety of relevant persons the responsible person must ensure that the premises and any facilities, equipment and devices provided in respect of the premises under this Order or, subject to paragraph (6), under any other enactment, including any enactment repealed or revoked by this Order, are subject to a suitable system of maintenance and are maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair. The outcome was clear that the system was not being maintained in an efficient state and was not in good repair.

How many smoke alarms do I need? 💨 Concerning statistics from a Government report in 2022 revealed a smoke alarm was not present in 24% of all dwelling fires, and a further 37% of all dwelling fire-related fatalities. Advice from the UK Government recommends having a smoke alarm on the ceiling of every level in your home! 🚨 Smoke detectors have a limited range, so if you have a large property or an unusual floor plan, it would be safer to increase this as required. The NFCC (National Fire Chiefs Council) has published a new policy statement regarding the provision and installation of Automatic Water Suppression Systems (AWSS) in the built environment in the UK. Two quotes from statement, "Sprinklers save lives and reduce injuries" and "Whilst we support the installation and retrofitting of sprinklers in all buildings, we are particularly concerned about the the following buildings, Care Homes, Residential Buildings, Schools, Car Parks, Storage and Warehouses, & Hospitals". I wonder how many fire risk assessors make a standard recommendation in their fire risk assessments to install or even consider the installation of sprinkler systems, particularly when undertaking fire risk assessments for buildings containing dwellings, i.e. Blocks of Flats and HMO's, and Care Homes? This is a regular discussion and consideration on our fire risk assessment training courses which always engenders lively debate. Weekly fire alarm testing is essential to any property's fire safety plan and its compliance with British Standards. Testing your fire alarm system is incredibly quick and easy to do but unfortunately, it is something that we see being missed a lot. If you are feeling confident about completing this testing, be sure to speak to our team on how to correctly perform this. Completing weekly testing is outlined in BS5839 and is a requirement for any non-domestic property. However, we would recommend testing your fire detection devices no matter what property you are in. Quick weekly testing tips: -Ensure your alarm system is put on TEST if it is monitored -A different device should be tested each week -Your test is recorded in your fire log book -Any faults or issues should immediately be reported #fireandsecurity #firealarm #firesafety #compliance
