💦🚰 Ensuring Future Supply: Major Reservoir Project Set to Serve 15 Million People 💦🚰 Thames Water has taken a significant step forward in securing the future water supply for millions with the appointment of a new technical partner for the South East Strategic Reservoir Option (SESRO) near Abingdon. 👇 Key Highlights 👇 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽: Arup and Binnies (Arup Binnies joint venture) have been appointed to lead development proposals for the new reservoir. 🤝 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲: SESRO is expected to provide a secure water supply to 15 million customers across Thames Water, Southern Water, and Affinity Water catchments starting in 2040. 🚰 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱: By 2050, Thames Water anticipates the need for an additional 1 billion litres of water per day due to population growth and climate challenges. 💧 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: Arup and Binnies were selected after a thorough procurement exercise demonstrating their expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects. 🏗 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀: The joint venture will assist with engineering design, environmental assessment, planning, and land access and acquisition. ���️ 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹: If approved, the Development Consent Order (DCO) for SESRO will be submitted in 2026, with construction starting in 2029 and operations beginning by 2040. 📅 ----------------------------------------------------- The appointment of Arup and Binnies as the technical partner for SESRO marks another advancement in Thames Water's efforts to ensure long-term water security in the South East. 💦 #waterindustry #watersupply #engineering #reservoir #meicahub #grs

This reflects approximately 20% increase from the previous cost estimates. The increase can be attributed to supply chain cost increase and higher interest rates for financing. Costain Group PLC secures a contract to support the construction of the #SESRO reservoir (South East Strategic Reservoir Option), which will supplies water to customers in #London and #ThamesValley. The company will conduct clay compaction trials this summer to assess ground conditions at the proposed site. The project involves the construction of three test embankments within the reservoir footprint, each around 50 meters long, 20 meters wide, and up to 3 meters high. These trials are scheduled to be completed within six to twelve months. In addition to this project, Costain recently won a design and build contract worth over £5 million to upgrade Thames Water treatment sites in Berkshire and Hampshire. This comes after Thames Water faced a severe debt crisis last year, highlighting the critical need for infrastructure upgrades across the UK. More exciting news for Hitachi Zosen Inova, who have won the contract to construct a new Energy from Waste plant in Abu Dhabi. A joint venture with Alec Butec, the new plant will process 900,000T of non-recyclable waste each year. Given the success of their Dubai project - the largest EfW plant in the world - this is great news for the middle-east and for HZI. This is typical of nuclear: Hinkley Point originally was supposed to cost £9 billion in 2007 with a ten year build, which is an expensive $4.50 per watt. Now it is 14 years late and will cost £46 billion. When Ed Davey was the Energy Minister, he forced EDF to agree that cost overruns were for their account and that they would not be paid until they actually produced electricity. This would be a standard stipulation for any energy source apart from nuclear. EDF's CFO responded by resigning and the French Union Reps on the Supervisory Board in France threatened to force widespread board removals if this was accepted. Instead they succeeded in lobbying the Tories to cancel Eds proposals. Now the British Taxpayer/Energy consumer is on the hock for the extra £37 billion and the build is 15 years late ... and counting. Is there anyone from EDF or the nuclear lobby in my LinkedIn who can defend this, especially as it is standard practice in the nuclear industry? The French bond market is buckling in part because the French Nuclear Fleet built in the 1970s is starting to retire in the next five years. They are 78% nuclear, thank God the UK is only 12%.

Wylfa, a crucial component of the UK energy infrastructure, has been without the funding required to reach its full potential since 2019. Without this funding, it has been unable to contribute to the UK's next generation of the Nuclear fleet. However, discussions with Kepco and other major players in the nuclear market are ongoing, and I am optimistic that plans will soon be put in place to bring it back into the National energy plan. ENG Bauen had previously assisted clients in this project in 2019 and hopes to work closely with the new owners to assist in Britain's long-term goal of carbon neutrality. #NuclearPower #CarbonNeutral #ENGBauen
