What are some ways to ensure healthcare providers are sensitive to patients' transportation needs?
Do we need transportation at all? What can the patient and / or caregiver do themselves? Can telemedicine help? What about community resources or pharmacies? Our default should be care in one’s home, including self-care & self-management. After having exhausted that should we consider transport.

How can you team up with other advocates and support groups?
Speaking with patients (& caregivers) is a must when designing, delivering & evaluating healthcare services & products. That said, it seems that not all life sciences companies - nor payors/ providers - are conducting enough of this - yet! Added value can come from speaking to patients, whom in addition to sharing their valuable lived experience, and those from others in their networks, also bring a 'super-power'. What professional skills and experience can they also bring to bear? Personally, I'm not 'just' a patient with diabetes but also bring expertise as a (now non-practicing pharmacist) in medicines-taking, digital health, scaling-up business & in broader patient engagement techniques. Mark Duman, the Director of MD Healthcare Consultants in the UK, focuses on patient engagement and digital health strategy, working with established life science companies to actually put patients at the center of their activities. They are also working with start-ups to scale up their digital health services, navigate healthcare systems, and develop patient engagement strategies. The key to a patient-centric approach is working from the bottom up to find patients through local community and faith-based groups and patient advocacy groups.
Mark explains, "I'm a former pharmacist. I qualified in Aberdeen, in northern Scotland, back in 1990. I had a particular interest at that time in what we call over here pharmacy practice, the idea of supporting patients to take medicines, which, as we know, 50% of them sadly don't take as prescribed. That has been my focus throughout my career. I've worked in the National Health Service, which, as many of you will know, is the British healthcare system that is funded publicly. So I've dispensed medicines and talked to patients, and long story short, about 20 years ago, I got into the whole patient engagement side of things. No decision about us without the patient being included."
"On the life sciences side, lots of talk about patient engagement and, in many cases, lots of action, but it's often not coordinated. And it happens possibly within silos across even small businesses or small to medium biopharma. In the large ones, it's often even more diluted or siloed. We're being asked to look at where is the patient engagement strategy that joins this together. The evidence shows that providing high quality health information is beneficial. It has a positive impact on service utilisation and health costs, patients’ experience of healthcare and patients’ health behaviour and status. Providing access to quality health information and support is crucial to unlocking what has been termed the ‘blockbuster drug’ of patient engagement. Patient engagement is vital to help people manage their health, make informed decisions about their healthcare, and mitigate financial pressure on the health service.
Evidence from the review points to the most effective ways of providing consumer health information and maximising its impacts, including information tailored to the individual which addresses health literacy needs and which is supported by health or information professionals. The report, concludes that there are good business reasons to justify the need for commissioners and providers to invest more resource (time, money and training) in health information provision and support. -

Background: Consumer health information is becoming increasingly important and health policy in the UK is beginning to reflect this. This has implications for information producers, providers and users, with the move towards a more patient-centred health service.
Objectives: This review aims to provide a broad overview of the current state of consumer health information in the UK. It examines the changing roles of information producers, providers and users, exploring the impact of health literacy and new technologies. It features some of the current library and consumer health information projects taking place in the UK and discusses the role that libraries may play in the future.
Methods: The article focuses on consumer health information in a policy context. It is based on the experiences of the authors' work for the Patient Information Forum and knowledge of consumer health information. A number of library and information professionals were consulted regarding the library and information projects.
Conclusions: Communication between health professionals and patients, and between health educators and the public, is key in order for consumer health information to have the ability to improve health outcomes. Further, especially local, investment into the production, distribution and delivery of consumer health information is recommended.Other authorsSee publication -
