National Grid unveils winners for £9bn network upgrade National Grid has confirmed the seven winners of its Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) projects to connect offshore wind farms to the energy network. The firms forming the Great Grid Partnership are: Construction partners – Laing O'Rourke, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Morrison Energy Services, Murphy and Omexom/Taylor Woodrow Design and consenting service partners – AECOM Arup JV and WSP The #ASTI projects form a key part of the £9bn #GreatGridUpgrade which is building the significant new #electricity network #infrastructure. #NationalGrid said the new ‘enterprise model’ is designed to speed up the delivery of electricity #infrastructure by taking a fresh approach to #UK #supplychain and skills issues. The partnership aims to #coordinate the #planning and #execution of projects, allowing each #supplier and National Grid to pool their #resources, #skills, #insights, and #experience to deliver faster and more #economically – driving value for money and benefits for both #consumers and local #communities. Carl Trowell, President, Strategic Infrastructure, National Grid said: “Today’s announcement is another significant and exciting milestone in the delivery of The Great Grid Upgrade – the largest overhaul of the electricity grid in decades. The scale and pace of this upgrade requires us to unite as an industry and to think and act differently. “This Great Grid Partnership is a ground-breaking initiative from National Grid that places our supply chain partners at the heart of our infrastructure upgrade programme. ♻️ Scotland approves 560MW floater Greenvolt Group ♻️ Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, a joint venture between Plenitude (Eni) and HitecVision, have announced that their 560MW floating offshore wind project Green Volt has been granted offshore planning approval. With onshore consent announced earlier this month, Greenvolt Group has now received all its planning approvals and remains on track to be the first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in Europe When completed, Greenvolt Group will comprise up to 35 floating wind turbines - making it the World’s largest floating wind farm to date. The combined will be capable of producing up to 560MW of low-carbon electricity when it begins operation in 2029. It is estimated the wind farm will save around one million tonnes of carbon each year, while also attracting up to £3 billion in investment and creating hundreds of green jobs. #GreenTech #Renewables #GreenInvestments #OffshoreWind

Very exciting new from UK Power Networks today as they announce that electricity networks in England and Wales are accelerating grid connection offers for nearly 8GW of renewable energy projects! By using the Technical Limits program, over 200 projects have seen their connection offer dates brought forward by up to a decade, totalling 7.8GW capacity 🤯 This initiative allows projects to connect to lower voltage distribution networks, bypassing the need for reinforcement of the high voltage transmission network. ⚡🌬UK Power Networks Services is acquiring a renewables portfolio from SDCL Energy Efficiency Income Trust (SEEIT) ⚡🌬 The deal sees UK Power Networks Services taking ownership of 70 solar, wind and hydro energy plants, generating 68.7MW of electricity for United Utilities Water Limited (UUW). The portfolio is underpinned by a long-term power purchase agreement with UUW. Director of UK Power Networks Services David Mitchell said: “Our vision is to deliver sustainable, reliable energy and we see this renewables portfolio as a natural fit. “Our long-term objective is to grow our technology and geographic footprint in the renewables sector.” “We have been building our capacity in this sector in recent years and recently delivered one of the largest solar car ports in the UK. “This acquisition has been carefully negotiated to achieve a good price and is another example of us investing in large portfolios of key renewable UK assets.” reNEWS - Renewable Energy News #Renewables #energy #solar #wind #hydro

☀ Innovations in Solar Power ☀ It's that time of the week again at Applica. This time, I want to discuss "Innovations in Solar Power", focused on some concepts and developments that already exist, as well as highlighting the largest positives and negatives of each one. 🛣 Solar Roads A "solar road" could refer to one of two things - a smart road that runs off solar power, or a road that itself is a solar panel. I'm going to focus on the latter. The concept has been developed independently by several countries and nations, most notably France, the Netherlands, and China. First, the positives. A solar road would allow more of nature to be preserved, as we're simply replacing a standard road with solar panels, not expanding it. It could also provide more rural locations with access to clean energy. Unfortunately, that comes with a huge price tag, as France and the Netherlands discovered already, and these roads would need to be constantly cleaned and maintained. China may have the resources and infrastructure ready to make this a possibility in the near-future. 🌏 Solar Farms Solar farms are nothing new, but the West is very far behind the East when it comes to solar farming, with China, India, and the Middle East dominating the solar farm market. The four largest farms in the world exceed 10GW combined, which could feasibly power 10m homes in the UK. The obvious negative of solar power is that it is very dependent on the weather, which is where the next innovation stands out... 🛰 Solar Satellites It may sound a bit sci-fi, but it is hard to deny how useful space-based solar panels could be, where they can be permanently pointed towards the Sun and be unaffected by weather on Earth. The energy generated by these satellites could be beamed down using lasers (sounds a bit like a death-ray, I know) and would even operate overnight. The obvious drawbacks are the lack of current technology and the huge financial costs needed to produce it. The other issue is the unrelenting bombardment with charged solar particles could quickly end the lives of these satellites and render them useless. But still, a fun concept that may one day exist. With solar technology advancing all the time, one day we could see some truly spectacular renovations in the field of solar energy. And who knows? Maybe a solar-powered Moon-base isn't that far away... #solar #energy #deathray

According to a report published by the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies on May 22, 2024, energy from waste (EfW) facilities contribute 3.2% to the UK's power output. In 2022, these facilities produced 9.4TWh, which is 3.2% of the UK's total power output of 293.7TWh. EfW facilities also account for 3.5% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions.; Hopefully with the big push in CC on existing and new sites, this gives projects more scope for investment and council approval and the percentage is able to increase on power output while decreasing on emissions!

Did you know that tidal energy has the potential to provide 11% of the UK’s electricity demand? Tidal Energy offers predictability and consistency and a minimal environmental impact makes it a sustainable choice. With recent technological advancements it promises the UK efficiency and cost-effectiveness, as well as having the potential to contribute up to £17 billion to the UK economy by 2050. Challenges do remain, but with investment and supportive policies, it could most definitely be a game-changer in the global energy mix. There is an increasing drive to get people into green jobs, but how is the industry working to fill the offshore wind farm skills gap? As the renewable energy space continues to grow, so does the need for jobs. And for the offshore wind arm of this ever-expanding sector, this could not be more true. The Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC)'s 2023 report calls for 70,000 additional jobs in this space alone between now and 2030.
