Why do designers quit their jobs? I have to say this! 🙁 A pattern which has been found in the majority of the companies where design isn’t appreciated is that they rush most of the times to make the client as satisfied as they can. The problem worsens when marketing people and content strategists act as design leads, providing feedback on designers’ outputs. Without senior designers or active design managers to offer proper feedback mechanisms to junior designers, they often feel they aren’t growing, and the organization's low UX/design maturity becomes evident. 🤠 The key is understanding that designers are not just pixel pushers; they are integral to shaping the business, user experience and the product's success. What I believe is when design moves under a CPO or CTO, it’s not inherently problematic—if they’re visionaries who genuinely prioritise and value design. The core problem lies in leadership’s engagement and willingness to actively invest in design. There are no problems in organisations, where design is rooted in every corner of decision-making irrespective of structure. 😒 When leadership views design as merely a marketable feature to attract the clients rather than a necessity and if the value of design isn't understood at senior levels, the downward spiral increases. 😖 Once they remove any design authority from their leads and give it to someone who shouldn’t have it (such as marketing people), organisations often look outside for design leadership, failing to understand why they lack it internally. Enabling design success isn't just about the organisation chart—it's about valuing strategic design input and fostering a culture that appreciates the true impact of design. 😇 I believe, without companies advocating budgets for senior practitioners and senior design leaders, UX design will be relegated to being the wrong people’s paintbrush in the organisation. After mentoring more than 250+ designers, here is a 4-step framework I have developed to make the mentoring effective. 1.Discovery before advising Understand the root cause and the pain points of your mentees. Keep asking why questions to understand the problem. Assess the blocker that's holding them back from advancing to the next steps. 2.Visualize the roadmap I often open up a Google Doc or Notion document and write down a plan and roadmap to effectively reach their goals. Structure helps build clarity. 3.Curate trustworthy resources Even though there are tons of resources out there, many struggle to understand which one to choose. Curate the trusted and credible resources that will help them in the next steps. Everyone is different; what resource works for one might not work for another, so always personalize the resources. 4.Measure success and establish an accountability framework Understand what success looks like and track it on a per-call basis. Also, ask accountability-focused questions to make sure the guidance has been implemented. I provide access to chat during the mentoring period, as synchronous communication can be helpful here. Yes. Use UI templates, pre-made icons, stock or AI photos. But here’s where those things break down in design… It’s when you begin to focus on what the product needs and not what the customer needs. Great design solves firstly for the customer and no template can do that. Brand strategy and product strategy unlock the ability to create an amazing product because it informs, guides, and helps you to create new, truly valuable experiences for customers. This is the value that great design brings to your business: helping you create value for your customer. No amount of AI, templated design, or finding-the-cheapest-option can solve that. Yes, save your time and money where it matters, but don’t skimp out on your customer.
