  • Highways Agency Carbon Routemap: opportunities for a national low carbon transportation system

Kristian was technical lead and project coordinator for the development of a Highways Agency low carbon Routemap. The project was undertaken to aid the Agency with its forward planning on GHG emissions management and reduction. The outcome of the work provided the Highways Agency with a bespoke and detailed tool to create scenarios of estimated GHG emissions trajectories to 2050, and the ability to explore the decisions, actions and priorities that will be necessary for the Agency to manage its…

The outcome of the work provided the Highways Agency with a bespoke and detailed tool to create scenarios of estimated GHG emissions trajectories to 2050, and the ability to explore the decisions, actions and priorities that will be necessary for the Agency to manage its GHG emissions and work to reduce these out to 2050. Outputs included a technical report, carbon calculation model and infographic.

  • Façade design for the circular economy

Shifting current thinking and design and fabrication practice to improve resource efficiency will be central to delivering a circular economy. The built environment has an important role to play; and building façades represent an interesting opportunity within this. Shifting current thinking and design and fabrication practice to improve resource efficiency will be central to delivering a circular economy. The built environment has an important role to play; and building façades represent an interesting opportunity within this. Often designed for only 20 to 30 years, they typically reach obsolescence well before the building is demolished and replaced. Unfortunately at the current time they are not designed with end of life in mind. Kristian visioned this project and then put together the team of partners from across the value chain to study the constraints and opportunities that might exist for creating closed loop façade systems.

Kristian project managed and provided analyst input on a carbon management and mitigation initiative for the UNDP Central Asia, and African health programmes. Addressing procurement of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, logistics and transport, capacity building activities, and investment in facilities and infrastructure, this work developed a carbon footprint model, conducting a hotspot and cost benefit analysis, created measurement tools, and managed dialogue with a complex mix of multi-national stakeholders in different organisational contexts. The aim was to enable climate change impacts to be considered alongside other constraints in the delivery of health services.

  • A UK Built Environment Carbon Routemap, BIS/Green Construction Board & WRAP

The project developed a carbon routemap for UK Government and its stakeholders to demonstrate how to deliver a low carbon built environment by 2050. The routemap is based on near term legislation and policies, combined with proposed future interventions necessary to meet 80% reduction targets. The scope of the carbon model covers buildings, infrastructure, and scope III industrial and process emissions. The routemap is based on near term legislation and policies, combined with proposed future interventions necessary to meet 80% reduction targets. The scope of the carbon model covers buildings, infrastructure, and scope III industrial and process emissions. Plausible emission trajectories are defined together with an economic benefits assessment to prioritise actions and provide the UK with a clear forward pathway on its carbon mitigation programme. Kristian formed part of the project management team and helped development the modelling approach for the capital carbon elements.
