Today, we’re celebrating 1Password’s 18th birthday! 🎂 🎁 Created by David Teare, Roustem Karimov, Sara Teare, and Natalia Karimov, 1Password has undergone exciting product evolutions since its inception. People who are currently on Head ofs or Director positions and are aspiring to become VP: what do you think should be the major changes needed to reach that position? Recently, I had insightful discussions about this topic during the interactive event for senior engineering leadership #LeadingEng 2024 in London. Here are the key takeaways: - Understand Business Operations: Gain a comprehensive understanding of how the business operates. - Commercial Understanding of Engineering: Develop a strong grasp of the commercial aspects of engineering. This includes knowing the key performance measures in your company, understanding potential R&D tax credits in your country, discerning why EBITDA is measured instead of EBIT, knowing what you need to teach your team, etc. - Strategic Thinking: Shift your focus more towards strategy. - Complement your CTO: Identify and embrace tasks that complement your CTO’s skills and preferences. What can you do or enjoy doing that your CTO can't or doesn't like to do? - Prioritize Business Success: Prioritize the overall success of the business over the success of your engineering team. How often do we focus on succeeding in our smaller engineering organization while neglecting what is important for the company? - Recognize Patterns and Initiate Change: Be proactive in recognizing patterns within your teams and initiating necessary changes. Pick the initiatives that allow you to stand out and be a hero. - Choose the Right Company: Choose a company that can offer you a clear path to leadership. As an organizational psychologist (aka big fan of performance management and feedback) and someone who speaks 3 languages (not all with equal levels of professional fluency 😅) this was a really important product update for me personally. Many of us work in organizations with colleagues who have different mother tongues, perhaps live in different countries and on different continents than we do. Offering a platform that they can comfortably use to share, and receive feedback, in the language that is most comfortable for them, makes a big impact not only on the quality of information, but also their sense of belonging.
