The British Beer & Pub Association, has today sent an open letter to Rishi Sunak Keir Starmer and Edward Davey stressing the important role pubs and breweries play in communities across the UK. The letter has been signed by Young's Pubs and over 80 leading pub and brewing companies. The British beer and pub sector is one of the most historical, culturally significant, economically successful and dynamic components of British identity generating over 930k vital jobs in every part of the UK. It is imperative that the next government provides a sustainable and proportionate fiscal and regulatory framework that allows the sector to do what it does best; invest in our businesses and teams, embrace changing consumer tastes, and provide the community hubs that are the crucial and often invisible glue to social cohesion. A new survey from a leading trade body has laid bare the “precarious situation” facing the self-catering industry in Scotland. The Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers, which represents over 1,700 professional self-catering businesses, has published troubling new data on the state of the business environment that this £1bn per annum industry finds itself in. Businesses face a tough set of circumstances, with existing and contemplated government regulation like that for short-term lets, changes to the Furnished Holiday Letting (FHL) tax regime and the proposed visitor levy, combining with cost-of-living pressures. In a poll of over 600 self-caterers (622), representing over 7,200 bed spaces and nearly 2,000 properties, there is a notable decline in business confidence: - Nearly half (47%) express little optimism about their business performance over the next 24 months, compared to 34% for the next 3-6 months, signalling a real apprehension about the future trajectory of self-catering in Scotland;  - Around a third (30%) say guest numbers are down in 2023 compared to the previous year, with a similar percentage (29%) noting that their turnover had declined; - Nearly half (48%) say bookings in 2024 are down compared to 2023; and -  Just 54% intend to stay in business beyond 2024 as a self-catering operator. https://lnkd.in/es6XeuQr

Inquiry to explore UK hospitality staffing issue. Recently, a cross-party group of UK members of Parliament has launched an inquiry to address staff shortages in the hospitality industry. The inquiry will explore the reasons behind the high vacancy rates in the sector, which has seen over 100,000 unfilled positions in recent years. It will also assess strategies for making the hospitality industry more appealing to potential employees, both from within the UK and abroad. Given its historical reliance on overseas workers, the inquiry will also address how the sector can balance the utilisation of UK employees while delivering a high-quality customer experience. They will also evaluate the effectiveness of mental health initiatives for industry workers and analyse the impact of zero-hour contracts on staff retention within the sector. Closures in Britain’s hospitality sector slowed from eight sites a day in 2023 to four a day in the first quarter of 2024, the latest Hospitality Market Monitor reveals. The research indicates a 0.4% decline in total numbers between the start of January and the end of March—the third smallest quarter-on-quarter drop since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Today is #StopFoodWasteDay and we celebrate this day of action by sharing some innovative zero waste dishes created by Hilton London Metropole as part of their Taste of Zero Waste event. Our very own food specialist Hugh Jones, WRAP, was invited to the event yesterday along with a guest list that included top foodie influencers, community food groups and the media. ‘I was delighted to be a guest at this event which was a sneak preview of Hilton’s new zero waste menus being launched today on Stop Food Waste Day. Chef Paul and his team demonstrated what can be achieved with food that typically goes to waste. Food transformed, making it both environmentally friendly and delicious.’ The Taste of Zero Waste menu included dishes that used all parts of produce to save edible food from going in the bin, such as Crisp fried cod tongues, Chicken mince on toast with grilled chicken heart (image below) and - a great way to use up surplus croissants - Bread and Butter Pudding. Hospitality industry leaders have been calling for a cut in VAT, after they have been hit by continuous hikes in energy and ingredient prices, as well as staffing costs and a fall in consumer spending.
