  • Are You Thinking "Straight"?

    Joy Langley

It's no secret. And I spend a lot of time reminding you. I am an over-achieving over-thinker. So let's enter a room we haven't explored very much ...the very nature of how we think.
It's high time we addressed the 'Elephant In The Room.'

Because without thoughts - we wouldn't be the emotional, rational beings we are (most of the time). Trying to have our best life. Whilst finding deep relationships, meaning and purpose on earth.

It's high time we addressed the 'Elephant In The Room.'

    ...THOUGHTS HAVE POWER

Because without thoughts - we wouldn't be the emotional, rational beings we are (most of the time). Trying to have our best life. Whilst finding deep relationships, meaning and purpose on earth.
Our thoughts create feelings. Which in turn spur actions. Which leads to results. It's a powerful, yet often overlooked cycle of feeling, thinking, and doing.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: Understanding Our Inner Universe
By identifying and labelling our own feelings. It empowers us to navigate our emotional landscape. And helps us decide what to do next.
The problems start when we ...meet other people!

    NAVIGATING THE WORLD OF OTHERS

Each person brings their own set of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors into the mix. No! we cannot read their mind. But ...through developing your Emotional Intelligence skills, we can get pretty close. And this helps build stronger connections. Which in turn builds ... better business and personal relationships.

    POWERS OF PREDICTION
Predicting other people's thoughts or feelings accurately is in reality - just your best 'guess.' But we can start to imagine what is going on in someone else's world by ...their tone of voice ...body language ...and behaviour. It can be tricky! But it's a crucial skill well worth practicing. Simply because it builds and strengthens rapport. It enables us to communicate effectively in business and stay in harmony with those around us.

    POWER OF COLLECTIVE THINKING
Here's the bigger picture. When multiple minds work together, the outcome is exponential! Not merely additive. It's like a supercharged brainstorming session that far surpasses the 'combined brainpower' of the individuals involved.

Can the acronym "SHINE" help you wake up to a simple life equation?
    Poor health = Struggling Business
Struggling Business = A Poorer You
A Poorer You = sad friends, family and colleagues :(
    does that make sense?
So what's the solution to a 'sane' human being ...recklessly rushing into a health and business crisis? Because trust me - the pack of cards will all come tumbling down.
It's time to rise and shine:

S - Self-Care: Prioritize activities that rejuvenate you. Self-care is a non-negotiable. Stop burning the candle at both ends.
H - Healthy Boundaries: Set boundaries to protect and block-out your time and energy. Even 10 minutes of breathing space can make a difference. Learn to say 'no.' Recognize your limits.
I - Involve Support: Seek support when needed. Reach out to friends, specialist coaches, professional psychotherapists, online charities.
N - Nurture Stress Management: Develop healthy coping mechanisms to deal with low level business stress. We can't get away from it but... we can counteract it. Stop and take a breath (can you do 2 minutes?). Practice mindfulness. Do some deep breathing (use your body to calm the nervous system). Engage in creative activities.
E - Evaluate and Reflect: Regularly reflect on your goals and priorities. Ensure your actions align with what truly matters to you.
    DON'T LOSE SIGHT OF ...YOU
(you're the only 'one' you've got)
In our relentless pursuit to become the best versions of ourselves, that is make money! ... We can find ourselves engulfed in a wildfire of ambition and activity.
However, this quest can become dangerous when we lose sight of what truly matters.... our life.
The signs of burnout are always there, lurking beneath the surface, waiting to be acknowledged. They manifest as: poor physical health, poor emotional control, poor mental thought patterns, and low spiritual energy.

  • Could Self Sabotage Be The Weakest Business Link?

“A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” Ever heard that old proverb before?

Well business growth and success are heavily influenced by our internal emotional state. And this is heavily influenced by subconscious mind programs.

It all comes down to the human design. We are wired for ‘survival.’
Invisible mental and emotional blocks can act as a 'rate limiting step' in the entrepreneurial mind. In chemistry & engineering this term describes a well known process ...where the whole system slows down due to the most weakest and sluggish component. The weakest link.

The rate determining component is in charge. And it's a perfect description of how internal emotional and mental challenges become a barrier to desired external business success.

    Signs of Self-Sabotage
Your grand business vision requires numerous steps and processes to work seamlessly together. But how can you reduce internal resistance - and get the results you want?
It's essential to recognize when emotional and mental self-sabotage is occurring. Take a moment to reflect on whether you:
Feel anxious about how others perceive you and your business ideas.
Are plagued by self-doubt and anxiety about your intelligence, competence or performance.
Invent strange distractions and reasons to avoid working on key projects.
Find yourself stuck, unproductive or creatively blocked, losing focus on business goals.
Hesitate to take calculated risks or make decisions due to fear of failure.
Constantly comparing yourself to peers, friends, competitors, leading to feelings of inadequacy.
Are an overachiever, you put in long hours yet see little progress.
Procrastinate, and waste time implementing new business growth targets.
Struggle to maintain healthy life-work boundaries, which impact personal physical emotional & mental health. (and that of others)
Have lots of excuses and resist seeking help or delegating tasks ...even when overwhelmed.

But it doesn't mean that I'm ignoring my business. I'm actually enjoying my business. And I'm doing it with much more enthusiasm. Much more interest. ...Filling up my Joy Jar - And reducing my stress jar. Because business isn't easy.
Entrepreneurs are driven. Are motivated. And we give it 110%. That's all good for a short time. Attack projects In sprints...

Give yourself the grace and the space. To build your business empire in a more timely fashion. Without jeopardizing your health. Without jeopardizing your happiness.

    So s-l-o-w down.
I'm slowing down. (I didn't say the word stop!). Just slowing and taking the Revs down.

This cycle ultimately forms the foundation of our identity and our character. Which influences our outcomes and the results we get life. And this defines the legacy we create in the world.
Creativity Under Attack: Negative self-talk, stemming from real or imagined criticism, stunts our inner creativity— the source of innovative madcap ideas and unique solutions.

The Emotional Rollercoaster: We are emotional beings. Motivated, activated and driven by our emotional triggers and experiences. In today's multi-connected world, there's immense pressure to stay relevant, continually produce fresh ideas, and still be able to lead effectively. But can we really do that 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?

"We’re not used to being kind to ourselves. We’re not used to failing. And we can be perfectionists – our own worst enemy."

How We Handle Stress: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Good Days and Clarity: When things are going well, we enjoy clarity, focus, and an optimistic outlook.
Bad Days and Freefall: Conversely, when things aren't great, we may find ourselves in an emotional and mental spiral. Even a mental and emotional paralysis.
Self-Critical Tendencies: We are unkind to ourselves (lack of self compassion), struggle with failure (what we make it mean), and can be perfectionists. We become our own worst judge, critic and punisher.
Negative Programming: Our behaviours, communication styles, and leadership styles are often undermined. Negative self-talk and negative belief statements, result in a self-defeating cycle of pain, conflict and frustration.

  • Does everyone have E.I. (emotional intelligence)?

    Joy Langley

I just read an interesting article about E.I.
The concept of 'emotional intelligence' feels like another buzz word doesn't it? But when you dig deeper it's a skill we all possess to varying degrees. And apparently it can be measured.

I just read an interesting article about E.I.
The concept of 'emotional intelligence' feels like another buzz word doesn't it? But when you dig deeper it's a skill we all possess to varying degrees. And apparently it can be measured.
So I am going to talk to Robin Hills Leadership Management Trainer about the various ways of measuring this on a linkedin live (12th March 1pm).
However ...why do I end up feeling annoyed, and somewhat irritated by the concept of E.I. measurements?
Because I hate being measured! Weighed and found lacking. Lets call it small "T" trauma from the education system!* (see explanation at end)
It triggers my "not good enough" emotional and mental button. And it sneaks out in some really odd business and personal interactions. My husband also gets to see it all, the good the bad and the ugly.
I end up thinking "Am I missing something? why am I not quite hitting the grade?"
Lets celebrate the fact all humans have varying degrees of EI. It starts from the moment we're born and have to fend for ourselves without access to verbal skills.
Through the quality of interactions with our carers (parents), and then with others, we learn how to win friends and influence them. We learn our place and our power. Because ultimately we are social creatures and want to be liked and fit in. Who doesn't want great relationships, where they are seen heard and understood, right?
However some people develop more emotional intelligence, lets call it emotional 'maturity' than others.
Some people are better at working out the moving parts of 'how to have positive interactions.' They understand what genuine fear feels like and they know how to use their intuition. They are more persuasive, and have greater influence and therefore greater impact. It's an invaluable business skill ...because we can't build our business empires by ourselves.

Flexible Schedule: Whether it's a one-off, in-person, or virtual session, coaching can be adapted to your busy timetable.

    Emotional Intelligence Coach CONS:
Surface Level: While EI coaches can address workplace issues, they may not delve into deeper psychological problems that can intersect with your professional life.
Quality Variance: With fewer endorsing bodies in the coaching industry, service quality can vary.
Insurance Coverage: Usually, coaching sessions aren't covered by health insurance.

    Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT) PROS:
Comprehensive Approach: By addressing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, CBT offers a holistic emotional management solution.
Evidence-Based: CBT stands on solid ground, backed by extensive research and proven to change thought and behavior patterns.
Deeper Insights: CBT therapists can unravel and address deep-seated issues or traumas using established frameworks for stress, depression, and anxiety.

    Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT) CONS:
Stigma: Despite changing attitudes, a stigma can still be associated with seeing a therapist.
Commitment Required: CBT typically requires a regular weekly commitment, which may not be feasible for all professionals.
Limited Business Focus: While CBT can enhance EI, it doesn’t necessarily zero in on its business applications.

Emotions are a fundamental part of human life. And understanding the different layers are crucial for personal development and high emotional intelligence.

But which emotions are the biggest liability for entrepreneurs?

Nailing this skillset is especially important in business …as entrepreneurs rely not only on intellectual abilities but heavily on gut instinct for business success. And we need to know whether our internal ‘emotions calibration’ is accurate and trustworthy.

American psychologist and researcher Paul Ekman did pioneering work in the 1950s.
Paul Ekman looked at emotions across cultures in relation to facial expressions and micro expressions.
And then Ekman introduced FACS (facial action coding system) in 1978 because he'd identified 7 primary emotional experiences, which he felt were universal:

Happiness: Usually indicated by a smile which involves multiple facial features working in tandem and open body posture.

Sadness: Often shown through a frown or downturned mouth, and in some cases, tears.

Fear: Generally seen through widened eyes, an open mouth, triggered by a perceived threat or danger.

Anger: Typically marked by narrowed eyes, a tensed body, and perhaps clenched fists.

Disgust: Recognized through a wrinkled nose, an eye squint, raised upper lip, and often averted gaze.

Surprise: A Startled response (positive or negative), widened eyes and an open mouth.

Comtempt : A raised lip, usually on one side of the face ( a mixture of both anger and disgust).

    PRACTICE THESE 11 STRATEGIES

To avoid falling victim to excessive envy and lust in your business, consider doing the following:
Firstly …promote and cultivate self-awareness and personal development.
Notice when the desire for personal gain might be clouding your judgement or compromise your values.
Stop obsessing over a competitor's success.
Stop trying to replicate other people’s strategies without considering how (if) they fit your own business model.
Avoid making impulsive decisions based solely on desires (allow your brain to engage!)
consider the long-term implications and sustainability of your decisions.
Foster a culture of integrity, transparency and accountability.
Prioritise ethical behaviour and maintain a strong moral compass.
Encourage employees to speak up if they notice inappropriate or unethical behaviour. Make sure there are consequences for those who engage in it.
Ultimately ….The way forward is focusing on your own goals and success rather than constantly comparing yourself to others.
Focus on your own game and staying in your own lane. Improve it, rather than obsessing over your competitors.
Be aware when paranoia, stress and the imposter syndrome begin to cloud your judgement.

PS: The lines between envy and lust gets blurred. They overlaps with the deadly sin of ….greed. Learning to draw your own line in the sand, and hold yourself accountable is a great skill. Plus if you put your pride aside you’ll allow others to point out your ‘blind-spots- and hold you accountable too.

    Well should we?
I am in the 'yes' camp. Because in my twenties I decided to take positive action ...despite feeling scared.
In fact, getting into 'action' broke a spell and snapped me out of a deepening cycle of depression. (warning: if your depression elicits darker thoughts, please seek help and advice).
Published in 1987, Susan Jeffers captured hearts and minds across the world Because she dared to confront THAT word? ...Feeeeear!

WHAT DOES YOUR FEAR SAY ABOUT YOU?

Fear is a powerful emotion, and serves as both a motivator and deterrent.
On one hand, fear can push us to confront challenges. And prepare us for potential threats.
It can instill a sense of urgency, propelling us towards our goals with gritted determination.
This stress "fight" response can lead to personal growth and achievement.

    ON THE OTHER HAND....
Fear can be paralyzing! Causing sleepless nights, anxiety, and procrastination.
In essence avoidance of fear triggers the "flight" response.

It moves us away from opportunities, event and challenging tasks.
The dread of failure or judgment is a flight response. And it can hold us back from pursuing our dreams, claiming our greatness or taking calculated risks.

    IN SUMMARY:

Reflect on how you respond to fear. Do you harness its energy or succumb to its weight?
The "Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway" principle helped me along with millions to challenge my negative thinking and shift out of paralysis.

Susan Jeffer's words are still as powerful today as when they were written.
Which just goes to show the power of words. And how they unearth human "truths" that go way beyond ... cognitive logical reasoning.

Personal development and growth matters. It's important to track mental and emotional attitudes and practices. So here are two questions to ask yourself ... that is, if this sort of thing matters to you :

Q: Do I need to review my current psychological responses, attitudes and practices? (emotional intelligence)
Q: Do I need to review current emotional & mental frameworks that might be stopping me from getting stuff done (taking action)?

When we take the answers to these two questions seriously, we begin to understand why our BIG vision isn't materialising ....the way we want it to (getting poor outcomes, poor results).

THE HOT & STEAMY BUSINESS JUNGLE
The problem is many business owners forget to ask themselves any questions. let alone these two questions.
They walk deeper and deeper into the hot & steamy business jungle. Getting more and more lost. Armed with optimism and a strong mug of coffee. Failing to examine their psychological responses, attitudes and practices, OR any negative emotional and mental frameworks that might be stopping the business from thriving.
When's the best time to admit we've lost our way? ...When one giant sequoia tree starts looking pretty much like the next! Or powerful emotions of frustration, anger, fear and brain fog regularly rent space inside our heads. Which we sadly take out on others.
The good news is he called me....
He knows he has to grow the business owner - to stop messing up his business growth and success. He has a great set of personal qualities and technical skills. He has a comfy pair of elasticated trousers. But when the waistband starts to pinch (ouch!) ...he calls me.

With the old adage "..Age brings great wisdom and experience.." ringing in my ear, I thought this would be the front-runner.
But 'Self-Growth & Development Work' stole the show with a whopping 75% of the votes.
On closer examination, it's reassuring to know that age and experience are NOT the only way to boost emotional intelligence.
Studies suggest our cognitive intellectual development (IQ) is completed by the time we reach late teens to early twenties ...whilst EQ development continues to grow as we mature.
    This is useful information! As...
Many leaders, entrepreneurs and high level executives have recognised the long-term value of EQ. They're learning it and providing emotional intelligence training for their teams.
"...why do emotionally intelligent employees perform better? There are several reasons. They make positive decisions, have better relationships with colleagues and know how to manage stress. Additionally, when employees have emotionally intelligent managers, they're more engaged at work..." (Forbes 2023, Importance of Emotional Intelligence At Work)

    WORKING ON SELF GROWTH
So how do you 'DO' the work? Well, it comes down to being asked great questions, taking daily EQ action-steps and working with someone who helps you feel supported. That mentor also challenges and holds you accountable for practicing the key EQ competencies.
Specialist mentors, trainers and therapists work with individuals and groups in this way. They challenge and increase self awareness (monitoring emotions, thoughts and behaviours). The specialists all achieve this in different ways, as the saying goes - 'many roads lead to Rome.' But a good starting point is an assessment.

Emotional intelligence assessments are useful, but they have their limitations. They only offer an 'insight' into an individuals potential to understand and manage emotions in personal and professional contexts.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is also known as EQ. And it's crucial for effective leadership and professional success in business. But how do you measure up to these 5 main pillars?

    1. Self-Awareness
Emotions are everything! Whether you love it or hate it, they control thoughts, and behaviours. But do you realise how much it affects your decision making process? You can either learn how to be consciously aware of them. Or allow emotions to be a subconscious automatic process that run circles round you and runs your life.

Are you able to recognize, label and fully utilise the kaleidoscope of your emotional experiences? This skill is the gateway to identifying your strengths, weaknesses, and values.

    2. Self-Regulation
When an emotion bubbles up in your body and is communicated to your brain, can you manage, control and express it appropriately? Emotions are impulses. And this 90 second impulse creates impulsive feelings and behaviours. If you want to get really good at choosing the emotions to express …then acquiring this skill is essential.
When done properly you handle stress, you're adaptable and remain calm under pressure. When done badly you blow-up at people, mis-direct your anger & aggression, or withdraw into an anxious moody place.

    3. Motivation
Being creative, self-directed and highly motivated are important character traits. People who have these are driven to achieve personal and business goals with no intervention from others. People who set this standard deliver quality work. They're also productive and welcome challenges.

Did you know that 95% of people think they are self-aware, but only 10 to 15% actually are?

    4. Empathy
The trick is to understand yourself, way before you try to understand others. This opens the door to being vulnerable. And this vulnerability allows you to “imagine” what it feels like to be someone else. I also thing people "sense" it.

It would be great if mental health was made a priority 365 days of the year - not just when we are guilt-tripped into caring.
Because global trends for the past 12 months show ...62% of people felt stress disrupted their daily life. With nearly two in five workers saying they took time off due to stress (Ipsos World Mental Health Day survey).

TOXIC WORK CULTURE, ATTITUDES & PRACTICES"

Is it possible to get what we want in this area? And I'll be asking this question and sharing solutions in a free webinar 28th October ("3 Steps To Make People Do What You Want"). The economy, politics, technology and more are creating more stressed out, anxious individuals than ever before. But the source of the problem can’t be blamed solely on businesses.
However toxic work cultures, attitudes and practices do contribute to people ‘quietly quitting.’
And this definitely makes it a ‘business’ problem (affects profits - costs of rehiring, re-training etc).
The solution? Collaborate with mental health charities and professionals who know this field. Find a way to make ‘caring about mental health’ an every day thing. Not just a flash in the pan!

When in doubt, call in the experts! So here's Robin Hills a global trainer and speaker who is well versed in the language of EQ Assessments. If you don't know your EQ-i 2.0 from your Myers-Briggs or your DISC?? ...then dive in.

    SUMMARY:
EI is different to IQ cognitive intelligence.

EI is framed as the synergy of positive thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Crucial for good decision-making and building authentic long-lasting relationships.

EI plays a vital role in leadership. It's a critical skill ...not just a passing trend.

There are a variety of personality and EI assessments. For example, Myers-Briggs, DISC, EQ-i 2.0. Each assessment has its pluses and minuses.

Emotional intelligence is a skill. It has the potential for growth throughout life (emotional maturity)... versus the static nature of IQ cognitive abilities.

EI has practical applications in the workplace ...such as improving empathy, self-awareness, and interpersonal skills.

Continual self-improvement is the key. Its a journey, and your EQ score changes over time, and is affected by life stage and life events. It's not a once and done thing. It highlights gaps that you can be coached on.

Emotional intelligence has a positive impact on your personal life and your professional success. ...You take YOU wherever you go. What happens at home affects work - and vice versa.
Acknowledge the value of any personality psychometric test. But be cautious of misusing it, abusing OR traumatising humans. You never know people's personal history.

Temper assessments with more recognised holistic, development-focused approaches. Respect peoples fears and concerns about tests. Finally remember skills, innate talents and life experience & wisdom ...are equally as valuable.

    LEARNING AND GROWING FEELS BAD
    (...and then good)

My husband is right (but don't tell him!). He hates when I ask him to do a little odd-job in the house because - 5 hours later its turned into a marathon.
I guess that's an inevitable part of any process? It teaches us new skills, resilience and flexibility.
So when that critical voice inside my head becomes too loud. And I feel like I want to s-c-r-e-a-m. And I'm drowning in a sea of negativity and self-doubt, I remember ....the importance of treating myself with a bit of self-compassion and empathy.

    KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON
As a Brit, there's a phrase that's almost encoded in our DNA. It served as a beacon of hope and resilience during the World War I and II:

    "Keep calm and carry on!"
This mantra is not just about staying cool under pressure. It's about finding constructive ways to navigate through (business & personal) storms, ensuring we emerge stronger and more prepared on the other side.

Observing how other entrepreneurs blend product and service delivery
Seeing the mix of information, personality - and edutainment.
Taking in strategies and guidance on sales and marketing.

There are days when my mental wealth and emotional capacity are strong, and the emails are a source of incredible inspiration and fun. I feel connected to a powerful, universal supergrid of energy, confidence and actionability.
...But there are days when these emails are overwhelmingly toxic. In fact they should carry a government health warning

    THE T.E.S.A. CYCLE OF DOOM:

What does it look like? The emails lead me down rabbit holes stuffed with articles and videos. They stir up a weird blend of emotions and sensations – fear, tension, anxiety, and unsettling nervous energy. So I track a couple of variables. I make a note of what's happening to my mental, emotional and physical states. And my answer to the much bigger question "why now?"
    Track your Thoughts

T- My THOUGHTS: These entrepreneurs make business sound so easy. What am I doing wrong, they seem to be making millions? I’m not cut out for being an entrepreneur. All this marketing stuff is too hard, it's impossible.
E - My EMOTIONS: sadness, fear, anxiety, feeling inferior & incompetent.
S - My SENSATIONS: Tension in stomach and heart. Nervous energy in muscles. Paralysis of thought.
A - My ACTIONS & OUTCOMES: Don’t feel like working. Not thinking straight. Throw myself into non-business related tasks to feel better about myself. Procrastinate and waste time. Feel demotivated and incompetent.

This is the T.E.S.A. cycle of doom in full swing:
    Troubling Thoughts
    Emotional unrest
    Stressful Sensations, and
Actions that lead to procrastination, incompetence and shame.

10 WAYS TO KNOW YOU ARE A PERFECTIONIST

    1. Stalled Progress: Business owners and entrepreneurs who are perfectionists can often procrastinate, delaying decisions or actions for fear of not achieving perfect results. This can significantly slow down business growth and progress.
    2. Limited Innovation: In a quest for perfection, entrepreneurs may limit their risk-taking, which can stifle creativity and innovation – key aspects of successful business strategies.
    3. Elevated Stress Levels: Constant striving for perfection can cause chronic stress for business owners, impacting their health and reducing their ability to effectively lead their business.
    4. Strained Business Relationships: Expecting staff, partners, or suppliers to live up to the same high standards of perfection can create tension and conflict, damaging important business relationships.

‘R’ for Review (keep the things that sustained us)

‘R’ for Renew (find innovative ways to propel us)

Let’s face it. Business owners are used to stress. We accept mild burnout. We push through unexpected crisis and fatigue. G.R.I.T is our middle name. But even we need to write a Christmas Checklist to get us through this season.

What is your best success strategy? …can you replace your Relentless Drive with Relentless Rest?

10 WAYS TO SLOW DOWN TO SPEED UP:

Give yourself permission to slow down once a day.
Say ‘no’ to non-essential calls /meetings / tasks.
Unplug digitally once a week (digital detachment).
Schedule relaxed breathing space every 60 minutes.
Spend 1 hour and get creative – write with colouring pens.
Meditate whilst – walking, having a bath/ shower, doing the washing-up.
Journal – if this is your preferred way of processing things.
Practice symbolic ‘letting go’ rituals. Write down problems and scrunch up the paper or burn it. Recite mantras and prayers.
Reconnect to your deeper purpose weekly. Have a screen saver message, or stick a post-it not to your laptop.
…Smile and have one belly-laugh daily.
So this season, before entering 2024, I am prescribing spiritual re-invigoration!
Because If you’re in a great place emotionally, mentally & spiritually, it’s going to rub off on all your business practices. Does that sound like an 'emotionally intelligent' way to operate?

But there is one thing that more could radically change your life. In fact change the way you perceive and react in your professional world… and that’s Emotional Intelligence (or EQ).
It's not just a buzzword. it's an influential factor that can shape your career trajectory.
Let's cut to the chase – this is why EQ matters:

GOES DEEPER THAN JUST KNOWING YOURSELF:
Emotional Intelligence is much more than understanding your own emotions. It's about recognizing others people’s emotions too. And using that knowledge to guide thinking and behaviour. Mastering EQ can be the difference between just surviving and truly thriving in your career.
    REAL-WORLD IMPACT:

EQ isn't just an abstract concept. it has practical, real-world implications. High EQ can help you navigate complex professional situations, manage teams more effectively, and more cooperative relationships.

    PERSONAL GROWTH:
EQ isn't a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. Everyone has unique emotional strengths and weaknesses. Understanding your specific emotional makeup helps you overcome recurring barriers that keep getting in the way. It helps you become a more effective manager and leader.

    SUSTAINED IMPROVEMENT:
Developing EQ isn't a one-and-done thing. It's the gift that keeps on giving. It sets you up for a lifetime of self-directed growth and improvement. With the right foundation, resources and commitment, you continue to grow and develop your EQ.

    SUMMARY:

Empathy: Try to understand not just the words, but the needs, emotions and perspectives behind them. Make an effort to 'feel' the way they feel.

Reflection: Instead of offering advice or your opinion, reflect back what you've heard, almost word for word. This helps confirm you are listening and understanding. It demonstrates 100% pure attention.
Can you practice this over the weekend? Because you'll notice the profound effectiveness it has on the quality of your conversations and relationships.

  • What Are The Two Most Important Days?

    Joy Langley

The two most important days in our lives are… the day we’re born and the day we find out why. And finding my ‘why’ has been a struggle. A roller coaster of trial and error, frustration and tears.
I find my purpose… and then I lose it.
I find my purpose again ..and then I lose it again.
    (why am I so careless?)

So this sensible quote from 19th century author Mark Twain struck a deep chord today:
"...The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day…

    Identify What We Want
The thing is, it's not just about identifying what we want to do in our professional and personal lives. We need to go a few layers deeper and ask ourselves:
Why do we want what we want?
What will it make us feel when we get it?
How will getting it tell us more about who we are as a human being?
Yes… some deep self-reflection was needed today. And its definitely not something I can buy from Amazon!
    But it’s achievable.
So long as I give myself permission to grab some quiet time. Some 'thinking' space. And do the following:
Repeat the three why, what, how questions in turn, over and over.
Then listen to the answers that bubble up to the surface of my conscious mind.
The brain is pretty simple. Ask it a question and it will rush off and fetch you an answer from the subconscious mind... like a dog chasing a stick.

  • What Can CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) Achieve?

Have you ever found yourself behaving in a way that surprises you? Or in a way that feels repetitive and it's difficult to stop yourself?

Cognitive behavioural therapy is a practical based talking therapy.

It recognises that there is a connection between our thoughts, what we feel (emotions) and our behaviours.

It recognises that negative thinking has a powerful effect on our feelings, emotions, moods and bodily changes (physiology).

Even when we are not fully conscious of having negative thoughts (perhaps just imagining 'what if') ...they trigger uncomfortable stress & anxiety bodily changes.

You might not want to belief this - but It's not always the situation that's the problem. It can often be our unique perspective on life.

The way we interpret things and what we make them mean, comes from the beliefs, assumptions and rules we make up as we go through life.

    ➤STRATEGY #1 - TRY PRACTICING THIS:

Negative thinking happens quickly, and when repeated creates harmful thinking patterns. Therapy helps you to:

    1. Reduce these by noticing YOUR harmful thinking patterns, and underlying core beliefs faster.

    2. Replace harmful thoughts with a more positive alternative - quickly gain a different perspective on an event.

    3. Find new emotions and behaviors that create less stress overwhelm, anxiety, and distress - AND more clarity, calm focus, confidence and resilience.

WARNING: This a bold claim… but hear me out:

One of my favourite reasons for working with business owners and entrepreneurs is NOT about guiding their transformation. (yes, you heard me right).
So what is it all about the (I hear you muttering)?
Well, it’s grabbing a box of popcorn, claiming my front seat and …witnessing a business mindset transformation unfold in the very first session. Hearing a client say: “I was wrong about being right.”
    The problem is we’re cynical.
Trust me, we’re riding a tsunami of a tide. Because we live in an economic and political space that makes us suspicious, cynical and guarded.
So I understand when a client walks in a devout sceptic. I understand they doubt their ability to change a lightbulb ...let alone change their minds about engrained mental and emotional business habits.

So the fun part for me (and it really is fun!,) is watching them enter the first session as a non-believer and leave a believer. Armed with fresh possibility they have the capacity to create shifts in their business. Hearing them say: “I was wrong about being right.”
Here’s the kicker: Most of us swear we’re not negative thinkers.
I say the same thing about myself, until my husband calls me out! And the other thing is, it’s really hard to find the light switch in a dark room.

...What I do is not quite magic. But it’s pretty close.
And that’s why I love this transformational way of working. And hearing clients say: “I was wrong about being right.”
    Yes, I know.
You’re still feeling sceptical about things (and that’s OK).
But you’ll be left forever thinking how different life would be, if only you’d learned the skills to change your mind. So you could start seeing your business differently, and embracing it's hidden potential.
So are you ready to see what you’re missing out on about you and your hidden business potential?
