I'M DEALING WITH A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE REAL TRAUMA FROM THEIR LAST CORPORATE EXPERIENCE.......AND IT'S NOT OK.... And whilst that trauma is attached to a ‘what’ happened’, it’s nearly always attached to a ‘who’. Are you the who? Are you a Leader? Do you really know the impact you can have on someone’s life and well being when you are their Leader? Have you ever had people in your team that have been made redundant? We all know it's the role that has been made redundant blah blah blah.... Did you know that for some people being made redundant means they have lost their identity, purpose and value? Did you know they feel overwhelmed, profoundly sad, are feeling lost, sometimes isolated and definitely devastated by it all.     We call it the emotional rollercoaster of redundancy.  It’s well documented. And often referred to as akin to a death, that requires a traditional grieving process. Can you hand on heart say you dealt with the redundancies in your team in a caring and compassionate way? Let’s scrap that, can you hand on heart say you always deal with your team members in a caring and compassionate way? I can’t.  It took me a lot of years and work to become a good Leader. I apologise now if I’ve been less than supportive, to anyone, anytime.     Maybe it was their wellbeing?  Maybe it was a ‘situation’.  Maybe it was ‘performance’. Have you every stonewalled, or perhaps ignored or left someone out? I’m dealing every day with people who are seriously traumatised from their last corporate experience.  People who live the brand and it's values. People who have put their all into their work.....for a long time.   It’s not OK.  And it’s not good enough.  We can do better peoples. If someone is struggling, stop and take the time to at least listen to them. We are not lacking for more formal resources either in the corporate space. And for those Leaders who do make the difference to people's lives - thank you. Keep doing it. You know who you are. And for those of you who have changed and/or made a difference to my life - thank you. If you're a Leader and are struggling with people in your team - I'm here to help. 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐬? The frustration of working in silos is a theme which comes up time and time again in our conversations with clients here at Scenius Consulting and Coaching. Frustrations which Matt Parkes FRSA MCIOF and I frequently encountered in our previous careers. That’s why when we joined a national UK charity as the directors of fundraising and engagement (aka marketing and communications), we decided to take pre-emptive action. It all started on day one with a coffee and a conversation. We made a pact, there and then, that we would work in partnership. At that time, the fundraising directorate was located on the second floor, while the recently re-structured engagement directorate was scattered across several floors. We were concerned that this physical dislocation would create a barrier to the cross-team collaboration needed to deliver our goals. So, after some careful negotiation, this is what we did: -   Brought the engagement and fundraising teams together on the same floor. -   Knocked down the walls separating the two teams to create a single workspace. -   Created a joint break-out space for both teams to hang out in – because as we all know the most important conversations take place by the water cooler and the kettle! Demolishing the walls between the two teams was a powerful symbol of breaking down silos and working as one team. But the real work was about breaking down internal walls through creating the right environment, projects and processes to support cross-team collaboration. Here are a few joint initiatives which our two teams delivered during the first year: - Pooled resources to commission audience research and created an Insight Hub for use by the whole organisation. - Joined forces to design a five-year fundraising, marketing and communications strategy and budget which received Board approval. - Designed and delivered a high-profile stakeholder event which achieved multiple objectives and won a prestigious national award. - Consideration (i.e. donors’ propensity to give to the charity) grew from 19% to 23% in the same year.   So, if you’re looking for assistance with improving collaboration and teamwork in your own organisation, do please reach out for a conversation with us. I have been speaking to d&i Leaders (Diversity and Inclusion Leaders) about how we can recognise and reward #employeenetworks. In this piece, I discuss the importance of employee networks with Jo Faragher (she/her), but we also examine why they are often undervalued. I think that’s mainly because employers can see employee networks as passion projects. This hugely undervalues the work of the network and the people within it, don’t you think⁉   I want to encourage employers to provide network leaders with protected time to fulfil the additional work and ensure that the work takes place during working hours.    I also think that many network leads are looking for visibility. Employers can fulfil this by inviting network leads to present their work, achievements and successes to the senior team and feature their work in internal and external communications.   What do you think? Navigating the Leadership Landscape: What does good Leadership look like today? (part 2!) Firstly thanks to all those who contributed their thoughts to my last post: https://lnkd.in/egqdzcQy (Ali, Meg, Kelly, Emma, Sarah, Keeley). I promised to follow up with my thoughts on this topic, and unsurprisingly, for those who read the discussions and insights, my thoughts centre around leading people. Yes of course, leaders need to be able to strategise, plan, analyse and deliver - I am not taking anything away from the requirement for these skills and level of competence. However, writing this post, got me thinking about one of my favourite Simon Sinek quotes (there are lots of favourites by the way). Quite simply, if you don't understand people, you don't understand business. Leaders need to know what makes their people tick and be able to successfully harness this to help their teams to achieve and deliver success. 🤝 Gone are the days of 'the boss'. Yes leaders need to lead, but this is much more of a collaborative approach these days. Your people have ideas, views, experiences and suggestions that can help shape processes, service and business decisions - use it! Not only does this collaborative approach encourage engagement and commitment, it also means that the best of the ideas are offered up rather than this just sitting with the leader. 😇 Leadership authenticity is important, not just so that the leader can lead in a way that is true to themselves, but this breeds trust and safety for your team 💕 Empathy and understanding is needed to truly understand your team. This is at varying levels however, I have lots of examples where I see businesses wholeheartedly stand by their employees at the times when they need it most. Whilst this is obviously the right thing to do, the by product is an increase sense of loyalty, commitment and belonging from team members. 🔍 Creating clarity for your people is essential. Helping all team members understand what success looks like for them and their role is key to driving engagement and helping your people thrive. It’s a new week, and a new government, and if you run a business you can’t keep your head in the sand any longer. Labour’s plans for employment legislation are going to seriously disrupt some business models. If your business can say yes to any of the following, you are firmly in the new Government’s sights, and you need to start thinking now about how you might respond to the legislation that has been promised within 100 days of Labour entering government : If your business: • Has employees on minimum wage • Uses zero hours contracts • Struggles to accommodate flexible working arrangements • Dismisses people during the first two years of employment using a shortened process • Dismisses people and offers them new contracts with worse terms • Offers different terms and benefits to worker and employees • Use freelancers and self employed workers • Employs parents or parents-to-be • Recognises – or doesn’t recognise – trade unions then these aren’t proposals you can afford to ignore. They will be the law, and the Labour Party have also promised to improve enforcement. Huge change to employment law is coming, and it’s coming soon. A few weeks ago I attended the live #Workhuman Conference here in London hosted by their CEO Eric Mosley A fascinating event with so many insights into the challenges of workplace engagement, wellbeing and the impact of reward systems But this insight stood out for me from Eric's presentation, and with post Covid challenges still reverberating, it does make you wonder about the impact of #hybrid workplaces might be having on employee #wellbeing. Raises the question, about what #organisations doing to consider their workplace design when it comes to loneliness. NEURODIVERGENCE PAIRED WITH NEURODIVERGENCE… 🔵 Many organisations offer a 'buddy' system that pairs a new starter with a current employee who has been with the organisation for some time. Not necessarily a veteran but someone who knows how the business works sufficiently to show a new colleague the ropes. 🔵 If a new employee declares themself as Autistic if your organisation already has systems in place to begin supporting neurodivergent employees from the point when they join the team, there may be a 'buddy' system in place to give neurodivergent employees a guide to who, where, and what. 🔵 In this type of system there could be a neurodivergent to neurodivergent peer process where an Autistic person is paired with another Autistic employee or one who has ADHD, or AuDHD (co-diagnoses of Autism and ADHD). 🔵 Whilst this could make sense on a number of levels it could also be a missed opportunity to help neurotypical team members to learn from neurodivergent colleagues about how they see and experience the world of work and the world in general. This also works in reverse. 🔵 When my daughter was at primary school, she was often paired with neurotypical buddies to help bring her out of her shell. They were often also introverted but together they would form a sort of bond that would get them through the challenges of social interactions during those pivotal and formative years. 🔵 By secondary school, once a diagnosis was received, the pairing switched to connecting with other neurodivergent people which was not usually successful. There is so much variance within Autism let alone across Autism and ADHD and any similarities are often watered down, altered, skewed, or even eradicated by personality, upbringing, culture, beliefs, values, and so on. 🔵 Opposites attract and complement after all and we all know it's possible to have too much of a good thing. Two + don't always deliver the desired result whilst a + and a - could provide the right balance to produce a winning formula. 🔵 Whilst it's not a mathematical equation or logical in anyway I'm always cautious when I see automatic assumptions around two people being a good fit because of what they are rather than who they are.
