Economic modelling indicates that a 10 GW scale Energy Hub in Scotland producing green hydrogen from floating offshore wind could produce hydrogen for £3.90/kg. 🇬🇧 Earlier today, the UK published its consultation on integrating carbon removals into its ETS (cap-and-trade system). The UK is at the forefront of the thinking in this policy area. Some key points from an initial read of the report: - Only expected to happen from 2028 onwards - A regulatory framework for carbon removal in UK is - sensibly - considered a precondition to integrating CDR into the ETS. This includes a need for credible certification and approved methodologies. Work for DESNZ to do here over the coming year (in parallel to similar efforts taking place in the EU under CRCF). - Proposal is to keep the same emissions cap. Any new CDR allowances "created" will be matched by removing the same number of traditional ETS allowances. So inclusion of CDR will lead to a net reduction of emissions. - UK-based CDR only. With a note that further work is needed to figure out implications for UK airlines given CORSIA allows a broader scope. - On permanence - soliciting views on what the minimum durability threshold should be. Still figuring out how to handle fungibility of credits with different durations - both "equivalence ratios" and buffer pools (for shorter duration credits) floated as ideas Overall - this reads as a carefully considered piece of policy and sets a framework for other jurisdictions to follow as they consider the same question - notably the EU. The biggest obstacle to moving ahead is identified early on - that the UK does not yet have a CRCF-equivalent defining carbon removal quality. But there is now a clear driver for that work to proceed at pace. Edit: For anyone wondering - wherever you see "GGR" in UK policy docs, read: "CDR" (DESNZ seem to be sticking to their guns on this one)

📊 Global Human Rights Analysis in the Energy Transition The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre’s Transition Minerals Tracker provides vital insights into the human rights policies and practices of companies mining essential commodities for renewable energy technologies. As the demand for cobalt, copper, lithium, manganese, nickel, and zinc increases, so do concerns about human rights abuses in the mining process. From 2010 to 2021, the Tracker identified 495 allegations of human rights abuse, with 61 new cases in 2021 alone. Alarmingly, one-third of these involve attacks against Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), particularly Indigenous peoples. This data highlights significant risks for local communities and HRDs, as well as potential reputational, legal, and financial risks for the companies involved. Understanding and addressing these issues is crucial for sustainable and ethical energy transitions. The UK general election is on the horizon, so what could Labour's proposal to remove the Energy Profits Levy investment allowance do to the future of UK field development economics? Well, Upstream by S&P Global Commodity Insights expert Jac Parsons has written a great piece diving into this very subject (link in comments below). But some key takeaways are that Labour proposes to increase the tax rate from 75% to 78% and remove the Investment allowance (IA), which provides a 91.4% tax relief on capital expenditure. This would reduce the Net Present Value (NPV) of projects, resulting in a potential overall reduction of approximately 37% in the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) for several projects. The impact of Labour's proposal is highlighted by projects like Rosebank and BP's Murlach redevelopment, which would experience an NPV reduction of over 20% compared to the current fiscal regime. While some projects may still proceed, there is a potential deterrence of investment across the UK and a further decline in oil and gas production. The revisions to the fiscal regime have both positive and negative impacts on project economics, with large capex projects being particularly affected by the removal of the IA. #UKElection #Upstream #economics

This is an alarming headline (It is a paywall just to note) The findings from the WUN survey are alarming. They highlight the requirement to confront gender disparity within the utilities sector. Some issues being highlighted: ▶ Not being taken seriously in professional roles ▶ Toxic work environments ultimately dampening morale and productivity ▶ Unconscious bias - a very complex issue I won't even attempt to tackle on this post! With so many smart (and experienced) people out there chasing industrial decarbonization, it’s a bit daunting to join a webcast with a group of genuine thought leaders to talk about #ccus and the energy from waste sector – here’s hoping I didn’t bring the average down too much 🤓!! But many thanks to Victoria Hart and the organisers at Energy from Waste, 5 - 6 March 2025 for the invite to join Charoula Melliou, Fabio Poretti, Jannicke Gerner Bjerkås, and Tom Croymans, PhD – was a great discussion (I sense we could have gone on for hours…..) and such an exciting sector to focus on as well, already home to some of the early movers (with actual FIDs taken) in this industrial #decarbonization wave in Europe right now. We covered a lot of ground in our discussion…….the over-arching value of this sector to handle non-recyclable waste, the fit it has with (and potential economics of) #carboncapture, the (unsurprising) importance of clear policy and regulatory support, and (likely one of the favourite themes of 2024) the potential to talk about classifying/tracing biogenic waste, enabling – along with #ccs – the creation of carbon removals / #CDR opportunities. This last theme is something that – through strong partnerships – the SLB and Aker Carbon Capture Joint Venture is already working on with Microsoft & Ørsted in Denmark (now signed up to purchase 3.67 million tonnes of CO2 removals over the next decade) and is also exploring in another industry (pulp & paper) in the US, along with Microsoft & CO280. And – back to first principles – we’re always happy to talk about this industry and #ccus, as it’s a 'good fit' for our #carboncapture approach – a good size fit with the modular Just Catch™ plants, help from the availability of ‘excess heat’, and (as noted above) the potential to capture CO2 from biogenic waste and generate carbon removals)….genuine ‘early mover material’, as noted before 😎 #decarbonization #ccs #ccus #energytransition PS – just in case you’re in need of weekend reading material on taking CO2 out of the Energy from Waste industry; back in May (22nd), Hasan M.’s team at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies put out a 30-ish page piece looking at decarbonizing this sector in the UK, particularly topics like the opportunity from negative removals, and the challenges from policy (eg: non pipeline transport).
