  • Vital Signs Lancashire

Understanding needs and issues in a community are the first step to being able to solve them. This is what the vital signs programme does. It measures the social temperature of different cities and communities across the UK to uncover the areas that need most help.

Community Foundations that run this programme then guide the generosity of local philanthropists towards the areas that need it the most.

The measures are based around 10 social themes, ranging from housing and homelessness to education and learning. Vital Signs identifies how well the region is performing in relation the rest of the UK, assessing local perceptions of the key issues in the issues which matter most to them.

Vital Signs are not just based on government statistics – it also looks at the needs and attitudes of local communities. Beyond numbers and statistics, Vital Signs can also help us understand what the implications of the findings are.

It provides emergency response support and clean-up support via charitable donations and grants.

The Appeal was kick-started by the Community Foundation with a £5,000 donation from its own Lancashire Community Investment Fund. Within 24 hours Lancaster Council agreed to dedicate £10,000 from their Lancaster Community Fund. Since then donations have been received from members of the pubic, local businesses, philanthropists and charitable trusts and funders, including Comic Relief. Partnerships have also been set up to raise the Appeal’s profile and secure more donations for those communities, including with the Daily Mail.

A Grand Gold Award is the highest level of recognition in the program. Grand Gold Awards are rare, and only one is given per category.

The awards, the premier recognition programme for educational advancement, are peer-selected and adjudicated, honouring institutions worldwide whose talented staff have advanced their organizations through their resourcefulness and ingenuity.

Winners are selected based on several factors, including overall quality, innovation, use of resources and the impact on the institution or its external and internal communities, such as alumni, parents, students, and faculty and staff.

In 2022, CASE received more than 4,500 entries from 636 institutions in nearly 30 countries. Of those, volunteer judges selected 626 exemplary entries for bronze, silver, gold, or Grand Gold recognition

The Bump It Forward campaign(link is external)(opens in a new tab), launched in January 2021, asked the public to give the equivalent of their vaccines (c£25/$33) to protect health workers in African countries until the vaccine reached them. The campaign was conceived and launched in 72 hours, and to date has raised more than £285,000 thanks to the support of over 5,000 donors. An estimated 1,323,017 items of PPE have been purchased through Bump It Forward, supporting health workers in seven countries.
