#HRForums Part I Interesting debate at our most recent online ALL-SECTOR #HRManagement #HRManager #HRDirector #HRForum with up to 100 blue chip companies from a variety of sectors discussing and sharing best practice on topics such as: 1. #EmployeeRecognition Schemes – good debate on how employees are nominated internally, with one member sharing all nominations online with the rest of the company. Gifts ranged from a simple thank you card to a bottle wine, box of chocs or a few tens of £UKP, up to a couple of hundred UKP, monthly, quarterly &/or at an annual awards event.  2. #LONGSERVICE – Recognition was typically for every 5yrs of service with some companies recognising more intervals at the early phase of a career and others removing some of the intervals after 10yrs. Awards ranged from badges, certificates or engraved awards; through to an extra day or two’s holiday every 5yrs (either permanently or for the anniversary year only) ... to monetary awards ranging from several hundreds of UKP up to a couple of thousand UKP. This is interesting. Nearly three quarters (71 per cent) of managers surveyed say they only ever engage with HR when they have employee-related issues to deal with. Perhaps no surprise, but it does highlight a dangerous disconnect between HR and the business - between HR and one of the key drivers of employee engagement. Middle managers have a massive role to play as the bridge between strategy and action, as captains of local culture and as guardians of ‘everyday EX’. As such they are a critical group for HR to work with, support and enable. If this relationship is as broken as this research suggests then it’s no wonder HR is seen as all about policy and process. Isn’t it time we put the ‘H’ back in HR?

The UK labour market has experienced several notable changes in 2024 so far. Here are the key points based on the latest available data identified by Artis Recruitment: ⬇ 🏢 Employment and Unemployment: The number of people aged 16+ in employment was 32.98 million, marking a decrease of approximately 195,000 from the previous year. This shift resulted in an employment rate for people aged 16-64 of 74.5%, slightly lower than earlier periods​. The unemployment rate increased slightly to 4.2%, with around 1.44 million people aged 16+ being unemployed. This represents an increase of 94,000 compared to the previous year​. 💻 Economic Inactivity: Economic inactivity rose, with 9.40 million people aged 16-64 being economically inactive, an increase of about 275,000 from the previous year. The inactivity rate was recorded at 22.2%. 📈 Wages and Vacancies: Real wages, including bonuses, grew by 1.8% annually, while wages excluding bonuses saw a slightly higher real annual growth of 2.1%. Nominal wages continued to rise, with a growth rate of 5.6% including bonuses and 6.0% excluding them​​. The number of vacancies dropped to 916,000 from the previous quarter, continuing a trend of decreases for the 21st consecutive period, although still above pre-pandemic levels​​. 💷 Minimum Wage: The minimum wage increased significantly, impacting approximately 1.6 million workers directly. The new rate for adults rose to £11.44, marking one of the largest annual increases in the minimum wage since its inception. This policy adjustment is part of a broader strategy to increase the minimum wage to two-thirds of typical hourly. ❌ Sector-Specific Strikes: There were an estimated 106,000 working days lost due to labour disputes, particularly in the health and social work sectors, which experienced the most significant number of days lost due to strikes in February 2024​​. Overall, while the UK labour market shows continued growth in wages and a significant policy push on minimum wages, challenges like rising unemployment and economic inactivity, along with a falling number of vacancies, indicate areas of concern that need to be addressed.
