The damage function is one of the inputs to modelling the “social cost of carbon”, a measure policymakers use to gauge whether investments to reduce climate change are worthwhile. Different methodologies produce wildly different answers. In 2022 America’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed revising up its estimate of the social cost of carbon from $51 to $190. Messrs Känzig’s and Bilal’s calculations produce a figure more than five times higher, at $1,056 a ton of carbon-dioxide equivalent. Thus they calculate that it would be worthwhile for America to pursue radical decarbonization even if no other country joined in. #climatechange #climateeconomics #climatetech

The transition away from fossil fuels and towards #electrification of everything from #HVAC to #EVs, coupled with the ascendency of #AI puts huge pressure on our already old #transmissioninfrastructure. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that the AI industry will consume at least 10 times the electricity demand it had in 2023. Very excited to share our new #fundinginstrument: the D-SAFE. It's modeled after the standard #SAFE (simple agreement for future equity). The D stands for "Development," and it's meant to address the specific #financing needs of #startups developing their first few pilot plants or commercial facilities. The D-SAFE gives the CEO the option to convert the #equity into a loan once the project is fully funded and underway, a feature that allows the CEO to redeem this capital to the investor – rather than automatically take on further dilution. It also makes it easier to finance new project developments with additional capital partners. The team Elemental Excelerator has been working on this for a while, and I'm excited to see it out in the wild. Our goal is to have the dollars recycle back to us as soon as the projects get larger financing so that we can re-deploy capital for #impact. We've already issued eight of these D-SAFEs to various portfolio companies and are excited for more! Just wrapped up reading the IEA's Batteries and Secure Energy Transitions Report, and it’s clear: we're facing a monumental opportunity, but not without its hurdles. The report highlights the pivotal role battery technology plays in global decarbonization, with a staggering 130% increase in battery technology rollout in 2023 alone. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol's statement, "the combination of solar PV and batteries is today competitive with new coal plants in India," speaks volumes on how the renewables landscape is transforming the energy sector.   It also reaffirms our commitment to our hybridization strategy and the immense potential it holds. I strongly believe that:   ☀️ By integrating storage with solar and wind technology, we can effectively tackle today’s energy challenges: affordability, reliability, security, and flexibility of power. Storage, in particular, offers grid flexibility, vital for both reliability and resilience as renewable power sources continue to dominate.   ❗ However, as outlined in the report, the deployment of storage must scale up significantly – with an estimated 1,500GW of energy storage needed worldwide by the decade's end, including 1,200 GW from batteries alone.   🏛 Policy will be pivotal in achieving this, necessitating a regulatory environment that encourages investment in storage and offers consistent solutions. It’s been a discouraging time in the #decarbonization space, despite the mounting daily evidence of the urgency for these companies to halt and reverse #globalwarming and #climatechange. Many early #greentech start-ups and pioneers are in their “Valley of Death”, the period after when they have been successfully funded, but now need to prove their business models to raise additional capital. And that is against a backdrop of mounting politicization, polarization, back tracking and outright reneging by the ecosystem these company’s business models depend on. Last month, direct air capture (#DAC) pioneer Global Thermostat was acquired by Zero Carbon Systems. This week publicly traded point source #carboncapture pioneer Aker Carbon Capture finalized its merger with SLB. And last Friday, ocean decarbonization pioneer Running Tide outright shut down, having raised over $50M, but now unable to raise any more due to a weaker than predicted voluntary carbon market. I’ve been there. In the early 90’s I was an internet pioneer who like many others at the time had a business model dependent on advertising. But like the slow-to-develop carbon markets, the supply greatly outweighed the demand (at that time), so despite many attempts to pivot, many of us where bought, merged, or folded. The internet survived and thrived, and is now inextricably woven into the fabric of our daily lives.  Entrepreneurs tried again and dejected employees found new purpose and jobs.  But unlike climate change, there was no real urgency. I believe that those who follow me here share my unshakable belief that climate change is neither a fad nor a hoax, and that it needs our continued sacrifice and dedication in spite of any and all obstacles. As the Dalai Lama says, “If you lose, don’t lose the lesson.” For those of you who are succeeding, please extend a hand to your competitors that maybe aren’t. To those of you who didn’t succeed, please shake it off and try again.  And to those of you who are on the cusp of giving up, reach out to your competitors, put aside your egos, and try to stay focused on our shared goal: a healthy, livable planet for us and our children.

EV, Solar, and Battery net zero pathways seem feasible. (But those are also the ones I know most about) CDR/CCS ... I've stopped following this as closely. Is there anything happening in this space that would permit such a bullish net zero scenario? The economics and energy requirements still seem wildly unfavorable on CDR. What do you think?

It's been an exciting two weeks for climate action and carbon market integrity progress! The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has just released its initial methodology assessments. These assessments are important to ensuring that carbon credits meet rigorous standards, promoting transparency, credibility and trust in the voluntary carbon market. https://lnkd.in/gqEmcNbq Additionally, the Biden administration unveiled its Principles for High-Integrity Voluntary Carbon Markets aiming to bolster the credibility of carbon offset initiatives in the fight against climate change. These principles emphasize robust measurement, verification and utilization, ensuring that every carbon credit represents a real and measurable climate benefit. https://lnkd.in/gcAZ94sN Integrity is critical to the functioning and expansion of the VCM, and initiatives like these demonstrate welcome progress.

Integrating Batteries with renewable power sources is capital intensive investment. However, it significantly reduces the operational and recurrent costs. At One Network we have #reduced our #consumption of #Fuel to a nearly #FiftyPercent 50% in last two quarters compared to the same two quarters of previous year. This is achieved just by installing and optimising the Batteries and Solar PV systems while all motorways are now operational on MTag and ANPR based ETC System. The optimization of Solar PV infrastructure is on-going. We are hoping for better results in days come - in terms of: 1) saving fuel consumption, 2) reducing costs on electricity billing, 3) bringing operational efficiency ensuring power for uninterrupted operations 24/7 4) reducing carbon emissions and moving towards sustainable motorways operations 5) more economic benefits to the country for reducing time-to-cross toll booths and cash handling for tax collection The attached report is published by Renewables First and Policy Research Institute for Equitable Development for Pakistan.
