About
25 years experience in developing scientific, technical, operational and policy solutions to geoscience issues at local, regional and national scales and connecting people and organisations to achieve common aims.
My broad knowledge of the geoscience sector has been generated by listening to real world requirements of schools, universities, town and county halls, contractors, consultants, asset owners, utility companies, international partners, regulators and governments.
I focus my energy on making geoscience data, information and knowledge available and accessible to improve planning and decision making particularly in the environmental, water resource, engineering and infrastructure sectors.
From 2018-2023 I led on the research phase and stakeholder engagement during the build phase of the UK National Underground Asset Register.
I have recently completed a secondment to the Government Office for Science where I lead a Foresight project ‘Future of the Subsurface’ identifying gaps in knowledge, policy, regulations and coordination related to subsurface resources.
I have now joined the Infrastructure Team at AtkinsRealis as Senior Stakeholder Manager maintaining, improving and developing relationships and networks for the benefit of our clients and to achieve better outcomes for the planet.

What are some common networking mistakes, and how do you avoid them?
One of the other key learnings is to quickly spot if you are talking to the wrong person (who will drain your energy, waste your time or are just very annoying) and manage to exit the conversation as politely as possible (dragging another equally useless person into the conversation and extracting yourself is my favourite)

What are some of the best tools and methods for stakeholder mapping?
What has not been mentioned is of course that success to stakeholder engagement is not the planning but the doing. Going out and meeting people in groups and individuals, being present at conferences and workshop, going out of your comfort zone and also visiting different parts of the country, talk to your adversaries and the competition, take risks, go into uncomfortable areas, make friends, don’t just talk to your colleagues, help others, make connections and constantly think bigger picture and listen, listen, listen. Empathy and conversational skills are key! Stakeholder engagement is NOT a desk based PMO function.

What are some of the best tools and methods for stakeholder mapping?
https://gcs.civilservice.gov.uk/publications/ensuring-effective-stakeholder-engagement/ This is very useful guidance from the UK Government Communication Service and I have used is successfully during the NUAR programme https://www.gov.uk/guidance/national-underground-asset-register-nuar

This project is looking at the range of current and future uses of the subsurface, including infrastructure, sustainable water management, geothermal energy, use of finite space, and climate adaptation.
The potential mix, interdependencies, and trade-offs over time and across the UK will be explored. The project will look to identify any gaps in knowledge, policy and/or regulatory frameworks that can be further explored to ensure the subsurface is utilised to its full potential.
